Sodium metabisulfite

We have carried out studying for antioxidant activity of 58 extracts prepared from vegetables and fruits in Viet Nam by three methods including DPPH and H2O2 scavenging activity assays and determination of total flavonoid content (TFC). Ethanol extract of Tamarind seed (NTBT-17), Grape seed (NTBT-19) and Mangosteen peel (TNB-10) showed high amount of TFC which is 848.8, 655.9 and 422.9 mgQE/100g, respectively.

The major protein fraction in pearl millet is prolamin the alcohol soluble fraction called pennisetin. Researches on the factors affecting pennisetin extraction and on its functional properties are still very scant. In this paper, the effect of temperature, reducing agents (β-mercaptoethanol, dithiothreitol or sodium metabisulfite) and sodium hydroxide on pennisetin extraction was assessed.

In the present study, the antioxidant properties of peripherally and nonperipherally water-soluble tetra (quinoline 5-sulfonic acid) substituted metal-free (1, 2), Zn(II) (3, 4), Co(II) (5, 6), and Mn(III)Cl (7, 8) phthalocyanine (Pc) derivatives were reported. In order to determine the antioxidant properties of the Pc compounds, three different commonly known antioxidant methods were used: DPPH (α,α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging, ferrous ion chelating, and reducing power assays.

The precipitation was done using sodium metabisulfite (Na₂S₂O₅). The elements in output residue obtained from acid leaching were identified using ICP-OES. Concentration of silver was found to be highest with the value of 64.40 mg/l among all the other elements present. Similarly, in header pins residue the concentration of silver was found to be 14.18 mg/l and copper 7.68 mg/l. The silver present in the IC chip ash was found to be 13.99 mg/l and the concentration of copper was 7.77 mg/l.

High moisture content of broccoli limits its post harvest longevity. So in order to make it available for a longer period the vegetable is needed to be preserved. For this, the present study was undertaken where dehydration was chosen as a mode of preservation and the experiment was aimed to establish suitable pre drying treatment combination and dehydration temperature for broccoli florets. Hot water blanching and chemicals like calcium chloride, citric acid, sodium metabisulfite and potassium metabisulfite were used for pre drying treatments.

The effects of sodium metabisulfite (SMB) on mitosis were investigated in Allium cepa L. The roots of A. cepa were treated with SMB concentrations of 7.5 mg/lt, 15 mg/lt and 30 mg/lt for 10- and 20-hour treatment periods. SMB significantly decreased the mitotic index (MI) at all concentrations and treatment periods.
