Soil-transmitted helminths caused millions of morbidity of preschool age children in sub-Saharan Africa with low socio-economic status and lack of clean water and sanitation. In Ethiopia, nearly half of children are affected by intestinal parasites. Despite this prevalence, deworming medication utilization among preschool age children is low.

This study assessed the risk associated with environmental contamination by parasites in urinary schistosomiasis endemic areas. Geo-coordinates of each soil sampling point, with the proportions of Schistosoma haematobium and STH infections were imported into ArcGIS 9.3 to map areas at risk.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil transmitted helminth and one among the under recognised tropical parasitic diseases. It is undoubtedly known that it causes hyperinfection and disseminated disease in people with any form of compromise in their immunity. On the other hand, here we report an adult male who is notimmunocompromised but still tends to have hyperinfection syndrome.

This study was conducted to assess the concentrations of microbial pathogens and Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH’s) as an initial step in the health risk reduction and reuse strategies in wastewater irrigation practices. Kumasi where the study was conducted is the second largest city in Ghana having significant number of farmers who engage in unrestricted wastewater irrigation practices.

The main objective of the study is to estimate prevalence of soil transmitted helminthic infection and factors associated with hookworm infections. Stool samples were collected from children admitted in wards, ICU’s and school camps and subjected to wet mount by iodine and saline. They were also subjected to concentration technique by formalin ethyl acetate solution.

Soil transmitted helminths or geohelminths still contribute a major burden to many countries including India. It’s of utmost importance to detect them accurately and timely. Studies on this group of intestinal parasites in adults are rare. Hence, the study explored the usefulness of stool concentration technique and compared them with the direct microscopy for better isolation of the geohelminths in adults. In this study, 254 consecutive stool samples were taken from adult patients of the hospital.
