This review paper does not intend to pinpoint one specific reconstruction but explores the many options proposed for each of the complex steps of the evolution of the East Vietnam Sea (or the South China Sea). We used the step-by-step reconstructions of Pubellier et al., [34] until 20 Ma and extrapolated the block movements to 100 Ma, thus proposing a simple scenario of events and discussing several fundamental questions.

The spreading of the East Vietnam Sea (EVS, also known as Bien Dong, or the South China Sea), leading to the occurrence of syn-spreading (33-16 Ma) and post-spreading (< 16 to present) volcanism. Syn-spreading magma making up thick layers of tholeiitic basalt with a geochemical composition close to the refractory and depleted mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) is mainly distributed inside the EVS basin.

Scleractinian corals are important reef builders, but around the world they are under the threat of global climate change as well as local stressors. Molecular resources are critical for understanding a species’ stress responses and resilience to the changing environment, but such resources are unavailable for most scleractinian corals, especially those distributed in the South China Sea.

The pearl oyster Pinctada fucata martensii (Pfu.), widely cultured in the South China Sea, is a precious source of sea pearls and calcifying materials. A yellow shell variety of Pfu. was obtained after years of artificial breeding. To identify differentially expressed genes between yellow shell and normal black shell pearl oysters, we performed transcriptomic sequencing and proteomic analyses using mantle edge tissues.

Vietnam is mainly located within the Indochina block in Southeast Asia. Asmall northern part of Vietnam belongs to the South China block, the southwest part liesadjacent to the Sibumasu block and opens to the East Sea on the east side. Tectonicactivities in Vietnam were very complicated they relate to intense interactions betweenmany geological blocks at different times. Magmatic emplacement is the final and instantproduct of tectonic activities.

Climate warming, variation of East Asian atmospheric system have affected the Chinese offshore environment through the air-sea interaction, the coastal waters of South China Sea had been influenced, leading a corresponding impact on the coral reef growth. This paper reports on coral coverage and dominant coral species changes in Xu wen National Coral Reef Nature Reserve, examines their relationship with meteorological factors anomalies recorded by satellite.

Sedimentary records of the continental shelves since Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5 are valuable for paleoenvironmental reconstruction and decipherment of land–sea interactions. Since the 1990s, different perspectives on global glacioclimate magnitudes and the associated evolution of major sedimentary environments during the Late Pleistocene have caused a distinctive understanding of marine transgressions and coastal deposits during MIS 3 and MIS 5.

In this paper, we use the high resolution weather forecast model (HRM), which is able to simulate meso-scale phenomena in limited regions, to predict motion of TCs in the South China Sea in 2002-2004, including two typical weak, slow-moving and unexpected changing TCs Mekhala and Nepartc;tk. Vve have chosen two forecast domains with different areas and resolutions. The results show that with the smaller domain, appropriate buffer and higher resolution HRM can predict better motion of TCs operating in the South China Sea.

In this paper we used the scheme of Betts-Miller-Janjic (BMJ) based on the convective adjustment toward tropical observationally structures in reality instead of Tiedtke in Hl4-31. Statistical verification results and verification using CRA method of Hl4-31 of two CPSs for seperated cases and for three rain seasons (2003-2005) shows that heavy rainfall forecast of Hl4-31/BMJ is better than one of H14-31/TK for Vietnam-South China Sea.

The results of examination are recorded 60 taxa including 10 genera and 5 families in this area. Among these presents, two genera and 33 species are firstly recorded in comparison with the octocoral fauna of Vietnam which fauna has been the subject of several studies. The result showed that 14 species of Sinularia, 9 species of Lobophytum, 6 species of Sarcophyton genera are newly recorded in Vietnam. Meanwhile, only one new species belonging to the Hicksonella, Paralemnalia, Nephthea, Xenia genera is firstly recorded in Vietnam.

This paper presents velocities of present-day tectonic movement and strain rate in the East Vietnam Sea (South China Sea) and surroundings determined from GPS campaigns between 2007 and 2010. We determine absolute velocities of GPS stations in the ITRF05 frame. The result indicates that GPS stations in the North of East Vietnam Sea move eastwards with the slip rate of 30 - 39 mm/yr, southwards at the velocities of 8 - 11 mm/yr. Song Tu Tay offshore moves eastwards at the rate of ~24 mm/yr and southwards at ~9 mm/yr

The readers of this monograph are familiar with the geographic location of the Philippine Archipelago. However, to have the facts clearly in mind, it will be stated that the group lies entirely within the north torrid zone, extending from 4[degree] 40' northward to 21[degree] 3' and from 116[degree] 40' to 126[degree] 34' east longitude. It is thus about 1,000 miles from north to south and 550 miles from east to west. The Pacific Ocean washes its eastern shores, the Sea of Celebes its southern, and the China Sea its western and northern shores.

The Red River Delta (hereafter as RRD) is one of the two biggest deltas in Vietnam with the population is 19,625 million persons in 2009. It is also the most populous area with the population density of 932 person/km2 in 2009 (General Statistics Office, 2010). Tien Hai District of Thai Binh Province locates in the eastern part of the RRD, lies in the coastal zone - a sensitive area and affected by the interaction between the mainland and the South China Sea (in Vietnamese as Biển Đông - East Sea). The study area of this research is Van Truong...
