Special interest

The modelling of traffic flow using methods and models from physics has a long history. In recent years especially cellular automata models have allowed for large-scale simulations of large traffic networks faster than real time. On the other hand, these systems are interesting for physicists since they allow to observe genuine nonequilibrium effects. Here the current status of cellular automata models for traffic flow is reviewed with special emphasis on nonequilibrium effects (e.g. phase transitions) induced by on- and off-ramps.

The main objective of this thesis is to comprehensively investigate the control of moisture in above-grade enclosure walls. Increasing the understanding of the interaction of the wind, rain, and building enclosure is of special interest. Masonry veneer wall systems will be a focus of the study because of their wide-spread use. As discussed above, pressure moderation and ventilation of the air space are two little understood components of moisture movement in walls and thus will also be given emphasis.

We discuss the proof of and systematic application of Case’s sum rules for Jacobi matrices. Of special interest is a linear combination of two of his sum rules which has strictly positive terms. Among our results are a complete classification of the spectral measures of all Jacobi matrices J for which J − J0 is Hilbert-Schmidt, and a proof of Nevai’s conjecture that the Szeg˝ condition o holds if J − J0 is trace class.
