The aim of the present study was to synthesize and characterize benzothiazine derivatives prepared by using 2-aminothiophenol and saccharine and in vitro screen their enzyme inhibition and antioxidant potential. Nine different derivatives were prepared and their structures were confirmed by spectral studies (EIMS, 1H and 13 C NMR). Enzyme inhibition potential of the synthesized compounds was evaluated by Ellman’s method, while antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH and FRAP assays.

Mono and hetero binuclear cryptates, [Gd(III)ML] + [M = VO(IV), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II)], were synthesized by a 2-step method. The ligand L represents the deprotonated anionic cryptate obtained by the 2+3 condensation of tris- (2-aminoethyl)amine with 2,6-diformyl-4-nitrophenol. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, spectral, magnetic, and electrochemical studies. Fluorescence of Gd(III) ion in the cavity was quenched by the encapsulated Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions. [GdCoL(NO3)]+ cryptate had a high lifetime value compared to other cryptates.

The Ni(II) and Zn(II) chelates are diamagnetic while Cu(II) complex showed normal paramagnetic moment. The fluorescence maxima of the compound in different solvents show that the emission wavelength increases with increases in the polarity of the solvent. The fluorescence intensity in the presence of Cu(II) ion shows a gradual decrease with increases in the concentration of metal ion.

A new ligand, 2,5-bis(furan-2-ylmethylcarbamoyl)terephthalic acid (BFMTA), was synthesized using 1,2,4,5- benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (pyromellitic dianhydride-PMDA) with furan-2-ylmethanamine (2-furfurylamine). New coordination polymers of the ligand (BFMTA) were also prepared using transition metal ions Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) metal salts. The coordination polymers and ligand were characterized by physicochemical characteristics, magnetic susceptibilities, spectroscopic investigations, and thermogravimetry.

New phthalocyanine compounds containing mixed-donor substituted macrocyclic groups were synthesized. The complexes of metal phthalocyanines 3–5 were prepared by the reaction of 2 to get dinitrile derivative complexes by means of the corresponding anhydrous metal salts. Structures of the new compounds were characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, elemental analysis, and MS spectral data.

The surface of mesocellular silica foam (MCF) was modified by grafting 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) to have a positive charge, and thus to provide sites for the immobilization of H3PW12O40(PW12). This modified nanosized mesoporous silica (PW12-APTES@MCF) was characterized by FTIR, XRD, BET, and TEM. XRD and adsorption–desorption analysis shows that the mesostructure of silica remains intact after various modifications, while the spectral technique shows the successful grafting of the neat PW12 inside the porous silica support.

The synthesis of novel, symmetrical, tetrasubstituted metallophthalocyanines (cobalt, zinc, and copper) bearing four 2-{[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl](methyl)amino} ethoxy units was reported. The dinitrile derivative was converted into the water-soluble quaternized product by its reaction with methyl iodide. The quaternized zinc phthalocyanine was obtained from the reaction of the water-soluble dinitrile derivative with zinc acetate. The structures of the newly synthesized molecules were proposed according to elemental analysis, 1 H NMR, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectral data.

The thermal stabilities of the phthalocyanine compounds were determined by thermogravimetric analysis. For metal-free (2) and zinc (3) phthalocyanines, photochemical (photodegradation and singlet oxygen quantum yields) and photophysical (fluorescence quantum yields and fluorescence lifetimes) properties were analyzed in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). The cobalt (4) and copper (5) phthalocyanines were not evaluated for this purpose because of their paramagnetic behavior. The metal-free (2) and zinc (3) phthalocyanines’ fluorescence quenching behaviors were also investigated.

The analytical and spectral data supported the binuclear formulation of the complexes with a 2:1 metal to ligand ratio and octahedral geometry. The molar conductance values of the UO2 (II)-complexes revealed their nonionic character. The ligands and their complexes were screened for their antibacterial activities towards the gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and the gram-negative Escherichia coli, as well as their antifungal activities against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans, in order to assess their antimicrobial potential.

All the synthesized compounds were characterized by spectral studies and screened for their in vitro antibacterial activity against S. aureus and B. thuringiensis (gram positive), and E. coli and K. pneumoniae (gram negative) bacterial strains. On comparing with the standard drug gentamicin, compounds derived from 4-methoxy and 3,4,5-trimethoxy benzaldehyde, i.e. 5g and 5h, showed broad spectrum antibacterial activity and the remaining compounds showed weak to moderate activity.
