Steam Generator Tube Rupture

This study aims to evaluate the potential for “Containment Bypass” in VVER/V320 reactor during extended Station Blackout (SBO) scenarios that challenge the tubes by primarily involving a natural circulation of superheated steam inside the piping loop and then induce creep rupture tube failure. Assessments are made of SCDAP/RELAP5 code capabilities for predicting the plant behavior during an SBO event and estimates are made of the uncertainties associated with the SCDAP/RELAP5 predictions for key fluid and components condition and for the SG tube failure margins.

To provide these missing data, the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) initiated the Aerosol Trapping In Steam GeneraTor (ARTIST) Project, which aimed to thoroughly investigate various aspects of aerosol removal in the secondary side of a breached steam generator. Between 2003 and 2011, the PSI has led the ARTIST Project, which involved intense collaboration between nearly 20 international partners. This summary paper presents key findings of experimental and analytical work conducted at the PSI within the ARTIST program.

Current probabilistic safety assessment evaluates that core damage can be prevented under small-break LOCA (SBLOCA) and steam generator tube rupture (SGTR) with rapid cool down (RCD) strategy when all safety injection systems are unavailable. However, previous research has pointed out a limitation of RCD in terms of initiation time.

Concerns over reliability assessments of the main components in nuclear power plants (NPPs) related to aging and continuous operation have increased. The conventional reliability assessment for main components uses experimental correlations under general conditions. Most NPPs have been operating in Korea for a long time, and it is predictable that NPPs operating for the same number of years would show varying extent of aging and degradation.

Multi-dimensional phenomena specific to the SGTR accident appeared such as significant thermal stratification in a cold leg in broken loop especially during the operation of highpressure injection (HPI) system. The RELAP5/MOD3.3 code overpredicted the broken SG secondaryside pressure after the start of the intact SG secondary-side depressurization, and failed to calculate the cold leg fluid temperature in broken loop.

In this paper, we present an application of particle filtering for the prediction of degradation in steam generator tubes. With a case study, we also show how the prediction results vary depending on the uncertainty of the measurement data.
