  • Fatty acids are an important energy source, for they yield over twice as much energy as an equal mass of carbohydrate or protein. In humans, the primary dietary source of fatty acids is triacylglycerols. This lecture will describe the metabolism of fatty acids. The two main components of fatty acid metabolism are β oxidation and fatty acid synthesis. Upon completion of this lecture, you will understand that the fatty-acid breakdown reactions of β oxidation result in the formation of reduced cofactors and acetyl-CoA molecules, which can be further catabolized to release free energy.

  • The last step of the biosynthesis ofl-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in plants and animals is catalyzed by l-gulono-1,4-lactone oxidoreductases, which use bothl-gulono-1,4-lactone and l-galactono-1,4-lactone as substrates. l-Gul-ono-1,4-lactone oxidase is missing in scurvy-prone, vitamin C-deficient ani-mals, such as humans and guinea pigs, which are also highly susceptible to tuberculosis.

  • In this module, you will simulate a Synthesis Gas Production facility. This will introduce you to the powerful reaction modelling capability of HYSYS. The production of synthesis gas is an important step in the production of ammonia. Synthesis gas is comprised of hydrogen and nitrogen at a molar ratio of 3:1. The main role of the synthesis gas plant is to convert natural gas, primarily methane, into hydrogen.

  • Aimed at shedding light on the possible options for developing countries to make use of agri- environmental and rural development measures within the framework of the WTO, this paper surveys those programs used in the Quad that are considered non or at most minimally trade distorting, non-discriminatory and otherwise consistent with current WTO rules. Furthermore, it tries to illustrate the possible outcomes in the ongoing negotiations in the WTO on the Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) from a developing country viewpoint, related to the types of mechanisms surveyed above. ...

  • Geraniol dehydrogenase (GeDH), which plays an important role in the bio-synthesis of neral, an alarm pheromone, was purified from the astigmatid miteCarpoglyphus lactis. The enzyme was obtained in an apparently homo-geneous and active form after 1879-fold purification through seven steps of chromatography.

  • Catharanthus roseus(L.) G. Don produces a number of biologically active terpenoid indole alkaloids via a complex terpenoid indole alkaloid biosyn-thetic pathway. The final dimerization step of this pathway, leading to the synthesis of a dimeric alkaloid, vinblastine, was demonstrated to be cata-lyzed by a basic peroxidase.

  • The isoprenoid methyl farnesoate (MF) has been implicated in the regulation of crustacean development and reproduction in conjunction with eyestalk molt inhibiting hormones and ecdysteroids. Farnesoic acid O-methyltransferase (FAMeT) catalyzes the methylation of farnesoic acid (FA) to produce MF in the terminal step of MF synthesis. We have previously cloned and characterized the shrimp FAMeT. In the present study, recombinant FAMeT (rFAMeT) was produced for bioassay and antiserum generation.

  • The synthesis of 10 new phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) analogues with modifications in the phosphate and the carboxylate function is described. Included are two potential irreversible inhibitors of PEP-utilizing enzymes. One incorporates a reactive chloromethylphosphonate function replacing the phosphate group of PEP. The second contains a chloromethyl group substituting for the carboxylate function of PEP. An improved procedure for the preparation of the known (Z)- and (E)-3-chloro-PEP is also given.

  • Penicillin acylase catalyses the hydrolysis and synthesis of semisyntheticb-lactam antibiotics via formation of a cova-lent acyl-enzyme intermediate. The kinetic and mechanistic aspects of these reactions were studied. Stopped-flow experiments with the penicillin and ampicillin analogues 2-nitro-5-phenylacetoxy-benzoic acid (NIPAOB) and D-2-nitro-5-[(phenylglycyl)amino]-benzoic acid (NIPGB) showed that the rate-limiting step in the conversion of penicillin G and ampicillin is the formation of the acyl-enzyme....

  • Moving from these altruist-focused interventions to the two final 'rungs' on the Ladder, which we class as non-altruist-focused interventions, are, on the other hand, ethically significant steps: scrutiny will be required to determine whether, in the circumstances, they may be ethically justified. Some will regard any intervention that encourages donation of bodily material primarily for non-altruistic purposes as simply 'mis-valuing' body parts, and would not consider such interventions to be acceptable in any circumstances. Others strongly disagree.

  • Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) play an important role to create the molecular complexity in a one-step process. Based on the mechanism and process of Mannich-type reactions in the synthesis of Grammin, arylthiomethylation reactions of indole were performed by using three components: indole, p-thiocresol and a solution of formaldehyde (36%) under two activation conditions, e.g. magnetic stirring and ultrasonic irradiation. The main product, 3-(p-tolylthiomethyl)-1H-indole, was obtained in a moderate yield (54%) under short irradiation (40 minutes) by probe sonicator.

  • The results showed that lignosulfonates synthesized by two steps process have similar characteristics and functional groups with lignosulfonates synthesized by one step process. Process by two steps can be easier operated than that by one step, also reaction time and reaction temperature in two steps process were shorter and lower than in one step process.

  • In this work, we present a facile and environmentally friendly synthesis of CQDs based on plasma - liquid interaction method. This is a single-step method and does not use toxic chemicals. The size distribution of obtained CQDs is rather uniform at approximately 3 nm. The emission peak of CQDs shifts from 427 nm to 523 nm as the excitation wavelength is varied from 340 nm to 460 nm. The non-equilibrium reactive chemistry of plasma liquid interaction is responsible for acceleration of the CQDs formation process.
