From propolis of Lepidotrigona ventralis stingless bee collected in Tuyen Quang province, eight compounds were isolated and determined as lantanolic acid, moronic acid, (+)-eudesmin, (+)-yangambin, (+)-syringaresinol, (+)-pinoresinol, dihydroconiferyl alcohol and vanillin using NMR and MS spectral data. Compounds 1 and 2 showed significant cytotoxicity against HepG-2 cancer cell line with IC50 values of 25.84±0.48 and 39.92±1.14 ug/mL, respectively.

The purpose of our study is to identify native pollinators of watermelon and the yield enhancement potential of managed honey bees and stingless bees. Specifically, we asked the following questions: (i) Which are the most effective pollinators? (ii) Is there any pollination limitation (i.e. insufficient pollen transfer to stigma for optimum fruit set) of the plant species within the study areas? (iii) Is there any inbreeding depression? (iv) Which one is more suitable between the western honey bee (A. mellifera) and the stingless bee (T.

Meiotic recombination is a fundamental genetic process that shuffles allele combinations and promotes accurate segregation of chromosomes. Analyses of the ubiquitous variation of recombination rates within and across species suggest that recombination is evolving adaptively. All studied insects with advanced eusociality have shown exceptionally high recombination rates, which may represent a prominent case of adaptive evolution of recombination.

Most of our understanding on the social behavior and genomics of bees and other social insects is centered on the Western honey bee, Apis mellifera. The genus Apis, however, is a highly derived branch comprising less than a dozen species, four of which genomically characterized.

A chemical study on the propolis of the stingless bee Lisotrigona cacciae collected from Hoa Binh province led to the isolation of four compounds including cycloartenol (1), cochinchinone A (2), α-mangostin (3), and isomangiferolic acid (4). Mangifera indica (Xoài) and Cratoxylum cochinchinense (Thành Ngạnh Nam) were suggested to be the resin sources of the propolis.

The present studies were carried out to know the diversity in morphology of stingless bee Tetragonula iridipennis in Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruppur districts of Tamil Nadu, India. Adult worker bees were collected from identified feral nest of T. iridipennis in three different locations and bees were preserved in 70% ethanol.

Each honey is unique on the basis of chemistry, quantity and combination of the various components that attributes towards its quality. The control and characterization of quality are of great importance and interest in apiculture. Henceforth the present study analyzed the quality parameters of honeys from different bee origin and compared the results with the quality criteria laid by European Union Directive for honeys. Processing was noted to have detrimental effect on several quality parameters of honeys; in spite of which it was remarkably within the critical limits.

It was not until the eighteenth century that the subject of this book, the pollination services of bees, began to be understood and valued. Nevertheless, the association between man and bees has been long and close, and dates from at least 2400 BC. Beekeeping with the Western honey bee, Apis mellifera, was a well-developed craft in ancient Egypt during the fi fth dynasty of the Old Kingdom.
