Strawberry fruits (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.)
-
Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) is a favorite fruit of high economic value due to its good taste and high nutrition ingredients. Strawberry is a fruit grown around the world that has distinct genetic structures and indicates diverse levels of precision to different environmental circumstances. Plants respond differently to diverse physiological processes, organizing of biological events, control of hormones, different individuals of the same species, and internal and external factors in developmental stages.

A field experiments was carried out at Horticulture Garden of the Department of Fruit Science, C. S. Azad University of Agriculture & Technology Kanpur (U.P.) during 2018-19 and 19-20. Four concentrations of GA3 and Boron viz. 0, 50, 75 and 100 ppm GA3 and 0, 0.10, 0.25 and 0.50% boron along with their combinations were tried in a Factorial Completely Randomized Design replicated thrice to find out their role on the flowering, fruiting and yield of strawberry. The results revealed that the application of 75 ppm of GA3 and 0.

Trials were conducted under protected conditions for two consecutive years to ascertain the role of different growing media on quality characteristics of strawberry cv. Chandler fruits. The investigations revealed that the plants grown in growing substrate composed of perlite + FYM (1:1) had the maximum influence on flower, fruit and yield characteristics in comparison to all other soilless substrates used under study. This substrate was also found to have a positive influence on physico-chemical characteristics like total soluble solids, total sugars and reducing sugars.

Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) is an important small-fruit crop, belonging to the family Rosaceae. In Himachal Pradesh, its cultivation under controlled environment is slowly gaining momentum but non-availability of good quality healthy planting material is a major obstacle in its commercial cultivation. Additionally, soil borne diseases, particular viruses transmitted by nematode vectors, cause severe production losses in strawberry culture. Use of soilless substrates can reduce the soil borne diseases besides improving the quality of the produce.
