  • Hydrogel products constitute a group of polymeric materials, the hydrophilic structure of which renders them capable of holding large amounts of water in their three-dimensional networks. Extensive employment of these products in a number of industrial and environmental areas of application is considered to be of prime importance. As expected, natural hydrogels were gradually replaced by synthetic types due to their higher water absorption capacity, long service life, and wide varieties of raw chemical resources.

  • In this paper, we describe a method for structural noun phrase disambiguation which mainly relies on the examination of the text corpus under analysis and doesn't need to integrate any domain-dependent lexico- or syntactico-semantic information. This method is implemented in the Terminology Extraction Sotware LEXTER. We first explain why the integration of LEXTER in the LEXTER-K project, which aims at building a tool for knowledge extraction from large technical text corpora, requires improving the quality of the terminolgy extracted by LEXTER.

  • Patent translation is a complex problem due to the highly specialized technical vocabulary and the peculiar textual structure of patent documents. In this paper we analyze patents along the orthogonal dimensions of topic and textual structure. We view different patent classes and different patent text sections such as title, abstract, and claims, as separate translation tasks, and investigate the influence of such tasks on machine translation performance.

  • Morphologically complex terms composed from Greek or Latin elements are frequent in scientific and technical texts. Word forming units are thus relevant cues for the identification of terms in domainspecific texts. This article describes a method for the automatic extraction of terms relying on the detection of classical prefixes and word-initial combining forms. Word-forming units are identified using a regular expression. The system then extracts terms by selecting words which either begin or coalesce with these elements. ...

  • Aggregating different pieces of similar information is necessary to generate concise and easy to understand reports in technical domains. This paper presents a general algorithm that combines similar messages in order to generate one or more coherent sentences for them. The process is not as trivial as might be expected. Problems encountered are briefly described. 1 Motivation Aggregation is any syntactic process that allows the expression of concise and tightly constructed text such as coordination or subordination.

  • This paper reports the results of a preliminary experiment on the detection of semantic variants of terms in a French technical document. The general goal of our work is to help the structuration of terminologies. Two kinds of semantic variants can be found in traditional terminologies : strict synonymy links and fuzzier relations like see-also. We have designed three rules which exploit general dictionary information to infer synonymy relations between complex candidate terms. The results have been examined by a human terminologist.

  • The initiating problem is unstructured design processes and vague descriptions of the form problems in the students’ critique of each other's product proposals, and very vague presentations of the product's aesthetic qualities in their reports. The problem must be seen in relation to the fact that the majority of the students can express themselves clearly in engineering fields and that design methodology is based on technical parameters.

  • Permanent grass cover crop is a technique used in the vineyards of Villa Bel-Air. As a result, the grass absorbs the water and the nutrients from the top layer of the soil, and forces the vine roots to go deeper and deeper to find nourishment. Throughout the year, de-budding, leaf-thinning and crop thinning are performed by the technical team. All of these manual operations ensure the perfect health and maturity of each bunch. The harvested grapes are then transferred onto a modern sorting table to remove all remaining vegetal matter.
