Submergence stress

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biomaterials that are accumulated intracellularly by bacterial cells in response to nutrient imbalances under environmental stress. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a bioplastic that is of interest to research to find an alternative to fossil-derived plastics.

Hypoxia induced by flooding causes significant losses to crop production almost every year. However, the molecular network of submergence signaling pathway is still poorly understood. According to previous studies, transgenic plants overexpressing the WRKY33 gene showed enhanced resistance to submergence stress.

Research on the submergence stress of rice has concentrated on the quiescence strategy to survive in long-term flooding conditions based on Submergence-1A (SUB1A). In the case of the ripening period, it is important that submergence stress can affect the quality as well as the survival of rice.

Coastal Odisha is one of the most flood prone areas of India where the paddy crop in the wet season is often devastated by flash floods with an average productivity of only 0.5–0.8 t ha⁻ ¹. The present study showed that farmers preferred to cultivate low yielding traditional land races owing to their better flood tolerance and the unavailability of flood tolerant high yielding varieties (HYVs).

An experiment was conducted with four rice genotypes Swarna Sub1, Nagina-22, NDR-102 and NDR-97 submergence related traits at the student’s instructional farm of Narendra Deva University of agriculture and technology, Kumarganj Ayodhya (U.P). Thirty five days old direct seeded rice seedlings was exposed to 11 days complete submergence treatment. Shoot elongation rate, catalase and peroxidase activity was recorded at the end of submergence treatment.

A sizeable minority of taxa is successful in areas prone to submergence. Many such plants elongate with increased vigour when underwater. This helps to restore contact with the aerial environment by shortening the duration of inundation. Poorly adapted species are usually incapable of this underwater escape.

In this chapter we will consider an important class of problems in which the fluid is either at rest or moving in such a manner that there is no relative motion between adjacent particles. In both instances there will be no shearing stresses in the fluid, and the only forces that develop on the surfaces of the particles will be due to the pressure. Thus, our principal concern is to investigate pressure and its variation throughout a fluid and the effect of pressure on submerged surfaces. The absence of shearing stresses greatly simplifies the analysis and, as we will see,...
