Sugarcane crop
-
The sugarcane is one of the most important crops in Brazil, the world´s largest sugar producer and the second largest ethanol producer. The presence of weeds in the sugarcane plantation can cause losses up to 90% of the production, caused by the competition for light, water and nutrients, between the crop and the weeds.

Ebook "Practical problems in soil mechanics and foundation engineering - Volume 2" discusses the problems of weed control in sugarcane against the background of world-wide cultivation, with emphasis on Taiwan's intensive pattern of crop farming. After a brief botanical description of sugarcane and its cultivation in relation to weed control, the weeds themselves are studied. Chemical control of weeds, problems of crop tolerance and responses of weed species to chemicals are examined.

Bacteria strains isolated from plant leaves of papaya, cassava, sugarcane, yam, and taro, were investigated for their potential probiotic properties. Four isolates from food crop plant leaves were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, Enterococcus faecalis, Lactobacillus paraplantarum, and Weissella paramesenteroides by sequence of 16S rDNA.

Sugarcane is a major crop of the tropics cultivated mainly for its high sucrose content. The crop is genetically less explored due to its complex polyploid genome. Sucrose synthesis and accumulation are complex processes influenced by physiological, biochemical and genetic factors, and the growth environment. The recent focus on the crop for fibre and biofuel has led to a renewed interest on understanding the molecular basis of sucrose and biomass traits.

Cold is a major abiotic stress limiting the production of tropical and subtropical crops in new production areas. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) originates from the tropics but is cultivated primarily in the sub-tropics where it frequently encounters cold stress. Besides regulating plant growth, miRNAs play an important role in environmental adaption.

Sugarcane (Saccharum L. plant) is an important crop for sugar and bio-energy production around the world. Among sugarcane diseases, smut caused by Sporisorium scitamineum is one of the major fungal diseases causing severe losses to the sugarcane industry. The use of PCR reference genes is essential to the normalization of data on gene expression involving the sugarcane-S. scitamineum interaction system; however, no report that addresses criteria in selecting these reference genes has been published to date.

Sugarcane aphid (Melanaphis sacchari) outbreaks in sorghum that were first reported in 2013 are now the most significant threat to this crop in all major sorghum production areas in the U.S. The outcomes of interactions between sugarcane aphid and sorghum and thus the severity of the outbreaks depend on sorghum genotype and potentially also on the phenology of sorghum.

Internode elongation is one of the most important traits in sugarcane because of its relation to crop productivity. Understanding the microRNA (miRNA) and mRNA expression profiles related to sugarcane internode elongation would help develop molecular improvement strategies but they are not yet well-investigated.

Resistance genes composing the two-layer immune system of plants are thought as important markers for breeding pathogen-resistant crops. Many have been the attempts to establish relationships between the genomic content of Resistance Gene Analogs (RGAs) of modern sugarcane cultivars to its degrees of resistance to diseases such as smut.

Application of diverse conventional and non-conventional approaches/ technologies for sugarcane improvement meet problems of complex genome, narrow genetic base of crop, genetic recombination, and poor fertility coupled with long breeding cycle. To sustain the production, productivity of sugar industry in rational manner, it is imperative to counsel sugarcane farmers for the selection of ideal varieties based on growth duration and maturity groups, planting crop season and kind of crop (plant/ratoon) to be taken.

In recent years, sugarcane has attracted increasing attention as an energy crop. Wild resources are widely used to improve the narrow genetic base of sugarcane. However, the infertility of F1 hybrids between Saccharum officinarum (S. officinarum) and Erianthus arundinaceus (E. arundinaceus) has hindered sugarcane breeding efforts.

Sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) genes play vital roles in sucrose production across various plant species. Modern sugarcane cultivar is derived from the hybridization between the high sugar content species Saccharum officinarum and the high stress tolerance species Saccharum spontaneum, generating one of the most complex genomes among all crops.
