Positron emission tomography (PET) is a type of nuclear medicine procedure that measures the metabolic activity of cells in body tissues that is well suited for detecting, staging and monitoring malignant tumours. In this paper, the authors have successfully developed the application based on the algorithm that they proposed.

Ebook "Advanced polymers in medicine" provides an up-to-date overview of the diverse medical applications of advanced polymers. The book opens by presenting important background information on polymer chemistry and physicochemical characterization of polymers. This serves as essential scientific support for the subsequent chapters, each of which is devoted to the applications of polymers in a particular medical specialty.

Glioblastoma patients commonly develop resistance to temozolomide chemotherapy. Hypoxia, which supports chemotherapy resistance, favors the expansion of glioblastoma stem cells (GSC), contributing to tumor relapse. Because of a deregulated sphingolipid metabolism, glioblastoma tissues contain high levels of the pro-survival sphingosine-1-phosphate and low levels of the pro-apoptotic ceramide.

Periodontitis is a chronic bacterial infection destroying tooth-supporting tissues. Like metronidazole, tinidazole (TNZ) is also effective in treating periodontitis. The preparation of polymeric nanoparticles containing TNZ helps to improve the solubility and increase the bioavailability of the drug. Objectives: This study aimed to formulate and optimize TNZ nanoparticles and evaluate their physicochemical properties.

Orthodontic treatment involves movement of teeth by compression and resorption of the alveolar bone using orthodontic forces. These movements are closely linked to the interactions between the teeth and the periodontal tissues that support them. Owing to an increase in adults seeking orthodontic treatment, orthodontists increasingly encounter patients with periodontal diseases, in whom orthodontic treatment is contraindicated. In rare cases, periodontitis may develop after treatment initiation.

The aim of this thesis was to investigate and characterise the effect on electron dosimetry that localising different forms of bolus, both approximately tissue equivalent and non tissue equivalent, in a non conventional, although reproducible locations, (ie not on the phantom surface). A series of experiments were derived to compare the differences in beam characteristics between the recognised conventional method of locating bolus on the surface to that of bolus supported by the Low Melting point Attenuator (LMA) Electron insert.

Particular somatic cells, namely cumulus cells (CCs) that support the oocyte maturation, fertility, and viability by providing the nutrients and energy to the oocyte envelop the mammalian oocyte. In this study, discarded human cumulus tissues were used to reveal the value of hyaluronic acid-rich CCs on several cellular events, including differentiation. Conditioned media, recovered from the primary culture of CCs, were introduced to the human nucleus pulposus cells (hNPCs) which were functionally distorted because of the loss of chondrogenecity

Owing to its purity and exceptional mechanical performance, bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is well suited for tissue engineering applications. BNC assembles as a network that features similarities with the extracellular matrix (ECM) while exhibiting excellent integrity in the wet state, suitable for suturing and sterilization.

A novel device for supine positioning in breast radiotherapy for patients with large or pendulous breasts has been developed and tested in phase II studies. This trial is designed to assess the efficacy of the device to reduce skin toxicity and unwanted normal tissue dose in comparison to the current clinical standard for supine breast support during breast radiotherapy.

We introduce the Microenvironment Cell Populations-counter (MCP-counter) method, which allows the robust quantification of the absolute abundance of eight immune and two stromal cell populations in heterogeneous tissues from transcriptomic data. We present in vitro mRNA mixture and ex vivo immunohistochemical data that quantitatively support the validity of our method’s estimates.

protect endangered tissueBenzoxazoles are DNA base bioisosteres and studies suggest that their derivatives have antiproliferative activities. Based on their antiproliferative activities they have been mostly studied as new generation anticancer drugs. In our study we exploited their antiproliferative effect, aiming to delineate bisbenzoxazole derivatives’ (RHE 231 and RHE 238) potential antiinflammatory effect on mouse macrophages that are activated in vitro through danger signal LPS stimulation. The membrane maintained stability under enzymatic conditions for up to 16 days of incubation. The results confirmed tBP as a cell-friendly scaffold for hADSCs due to low cytotoxicity and its ability to support an appropriate attachment and proliferation of hADSCs. Moreover, there was an accumulation of the extracellular matrix proteoglycan in tBP seeded with hADSCs after 7 and 14 days of chondrogenic induction. COMP as a specific marker of chondrogenesis was detected after 7 days, whereas type X-a1 collagen (Col10a1) expression was stable up to day 14.
