The present investigation was carried out in two different environments with aim to assess genetic variation among the genotypes for growth, yield attributes. The present investigation was comprised forty diverse genotypes of taro. The present study revealed that the significant differences for sixteen traits among genotypes of taro which indicated that the presence of adequate variability which could be harnessed for developing yield potential cultivars.

Colocasia [Colocasia esculenta var. antiquorum (L.) schott.], which is also known as Taro, Arvi, Katchu and eddode belongs to the family Aracea is an important edible aroid. Africa ranks first in area and production of colocasia and in India colocasia is favourite among Gujarat, Konkan region of Maharashtra and several other parts of south India. The corm and cormels are the major economic parts of Arvi. Corms of colocasia are rich in carbohydrate and protein and nearly one and half time more nutritious than potato.

aro [Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott] is one of the tropical tuber crops hailed as food security crop in tropics especially in developing nations. Tropical tuber crops are famously known for their withstanding capacity under harsh and marginal environments. But the severe reduction has been reported in taro biochemical, physiological parameters and corm yield under water deficit stress in spite of inherent drought tolerance capacity. A field experiment was conducted at experimental field of College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Manipur during 2017-2018. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications. Ten SSR markers were used to characterize 22 taro cultivars from North East India. The study revealed that the SSR primers like uq201- 302, Ce1 B03 and Ce1 C06 with PIC=0.82, 0.76 and 0.76 respectively were found to be the most informative markers which can be used for future molecular works on taro. The Jaccard’s similarity coefficient analysis ranging from 0.103 to 0.89 presented high level of genetic distance as no true duplicates were detected. The dendrogram constructed categorized the cultivars into two main clusters I and II.
