This paper derives from my own library-based research about task-based language teaching and my experience in teaching English using task-based language teaching. This paper begins by presenting a specific context of teaching speaking at Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA), and continues with a literature review about task-based language teaching and teaching speaking skills. In the last section, the relevance of using task-based language teaching to teach speaking and some practical issues emerging in the classroom will be discussed.

Recently Viet Nam National Foreign Language 2020 Project was launched as a government initiative to improve the foreign language learning and teaching system nationally. One task of the project is to introduce English at grade 3, which requires significant re-training for the country’s large number of primary English teachers in both English proficiency and methodology. Training-of-trainers (ToT), a cascade model of trainer training, has therefore been adopted as an option.

The present paper attempts to emphasise the mutual connection between testing and teaching in light of evaluating the effectiveness of task-oriented IELTS activities on the performances of IELTS trainees in their reading test. For this purpose, the learners in an IELTS preparation center in Hanoi were treated with IELTS reading materials under the adoption of task-based language teaching approach (TBLT) for three months.

Task-based language teaching (TBLT) has been extensively researched and applied in many education settings due to the belief in its effectiveness in maximizing learners’ language competency. Although this issue is not a new concept in language education, misunderstandings of TBLT do exist, which leads to further misapplications of the pedagogy.
