This study aims to explore the role of dictation as a technique in developing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ listening and: to investigate whether the use of dictation as a technique is useful in developing students listening or not. In addition to find out how students would respond to dictation as a teaching technique and to attract teachers’ attention towards the effectiveness of dictation as a technique in improving listening ability.

The study aims at investigating how students learn outside the classroom as well as the activities they focus on. The findings will be meaningful to English teachers in the school investigated because they can understand how their students learn English outside the class; therefore, they can design suitable strategies to improve their teaching skill as well as design various activities to help their students develop their English competence.

In recent years, a raising problem encountered by students in general and first year ones in particular in the foreign languages department at Hai Phong Private University is extremely bad listening comprehension. This leads to a serious subsequence is that student’s language proficiency is low as well as learning and teaching have to face many difficulties due to the reason that listening skill is an essential instrument when learning communication in any another languages.
