The object of the research is 60 first-year non- English language major students at Thai Nguyen University of Sciences. The students were randomly divided into 2 groups (experimental group and control group), each group consisted of 30 students.

This study indentified the performance of the self-study activities of students in terms of: students' awareness on self-study, study skills, services for self-study, teaching method and administration. Specially, it aimed to find out the factors both externally and internally that may affect the activities of students' self-study.

In recent years, the studies on the use of language games to help motivate learners’ participation and cooperation in learning foreign languages have been very popular among educational researchers in the world and in Vietnam. However, whether these innovative activities really enhance students’ competence in oral communication in the Northern mountainous region of Vietnam like in Thai Nguyen province has not been fully investigated by researchers.

The respondents of the study were 66 English major students of the College of Sciences, Thai Nguyen University in the first semester of the academic year 2010-2011. The findings revealed that there is significant relationship between reading comprehension ability and vocabualry ability, types of reading materials used during lesson, location of high school which graduated from.
