The coffee project

The Coffee Project will source its coffee from roasters that use a direct-trade model and provide ethically-sourced coffees. This model ensures appropriate compensation to the farmers at origin. The Coffee Project’s pricing will be comparable to its main competitor, Jude’s Health and Java House, while maintaining a 75% gross margin. Our competitive advantage will be our ability to donate to charity organizations, as well as our high-quality roaster lineup.

While the rubber trees are immature, selected legume cover crops such as Pueraria phoseoloides, Culopogonium mucunoides and Centrosemu pubescens may be grown on rubber plantations. Intercropping can be carried out with coconut trees and banana plants within the rubber plantation. Sometimes banana alone is used as an intercrop. Intercropping can also be carried out with rice, longgong, mangosteen, satow, bamboo, jampada, riang, durian, pineapple, coffee trees, neem and hot pepper (ITTO, 2000).

Developing a book of any magnitude requires time away from family and friends, so as we finish this one, we must confess that despite the obvious intellectual and personal satisfactions we enjoyed while writing this book, it was not always a pleasant experience. The book’s contents are for the most part the result of scribbling on napkins over numerous macchiati and espressos away from the office at different posts over the years. As researchers and consultants, perhaps our most creative moments arose during lengthy informal, and somewhat dreamy, discussions about enhanced oil recovery.
