  • This paper contributes to the body of literature on knowledge sharing through insight into the relationship between the format of questions asked of individuals who are sources of knowledge and the attitudes of those that have been given the opportunity to cognitively integrate this knowledge into their own knowledge base. Aspects of the theoretical model proposed by Bircham (2003) are empirically evaluated, with results supporting the model.

  • A number of organisations have recognised the importance of managing their organisation knowledge in a more structured manner. However, the question arises as to how to evaluate the benefits of a Knowledge Management (KM) strategy and its associated initiatives on the performance of the organisation. This paper presents a framework for the assessment of the likely impact of KM and discusses findings from an evaluation workshop held to critique the framework.

  • We study the impact of syntactic and shallow semantic information in automatic classification of questions and answers and answer re-ranking. We define (a) new tree structures based on shallow semantics encoded in Predicate Argument Structures (PASs) and (b) new kernel functions to exploit the representational power of such structures with Support Vector Machines. Our experiments suggest that syntactic information helps tasks such as question/answer classification and that shallow semantics gives remarkable contribution when a reliable set of PASs can be extracted, e.g. from answers. ...

  • Semantic Role Labeling (SRL) consists of, given a sentence, detecting basic event structures such as “who” did “what” to “whom”, “when” and “where”. From a linguistic point of view, a key component of the task corresponds to identifying the semantic arguments filling the roles of the sentence predicates. Typical predicate semantic arguments include Agent, Patient, and Instrument, but semantic roles may also be found as adjuncts (e.g., Locative, Temporal, Manner, and Cause).

  • In order to develop an in-depth understanding of the subject while at the same time reducing the complexity of our research endeavor, we decided to distinguish three related research questions that will be explained in more detail below. First, we were interested in the direct influences of regulatory actors on strategy formation – more specifically, on corporate re- source allocations. While this helped us to identify if there was an influence of regulatory actors, the second step involved examining how strategy formation was impacted.

  • Based on an exploratory, longitudinal, retrospective case study on the German energy utility E.ON, the study examines three related research questions. First, we ask if strategy formation as represented by corporate resource allocations is influenced by regulatory actors. Second, we explore how strategy formation is impacted in terms of internal alignments of corporate strategies and structures. And third, we elaborate on the corporation’s externally directed re- sponse strategies in order to reversely influence its environment.

  • The data allow us to focus on eight basic questions about the microfinance “industry”: Who are the lenders? How widespread is profitability? Are loans in fact repaid at the high rates advertised? Who are the customers? Why are interest rates so high? Are profits high enough to attract profit-maximizing investors? How important are subsidies? How robust are the financial data? The answers then take us back to reconsider the initial questions of subsidy, profit, and social impact in microfinance. Who are the lenders? The clash between Grameen Bank and...

  • Summative evaluation focusses on programs that are already underway or completed. It investigates the effects of the program, both intended and unintended. It seeks to answer the questions “Did the program make a difference?”(impact evaluation) and “Did the program meet its stated goals and objectives?”(outcome evaluation). In its most rigorous form the design of an outcome evaluation can become very complex in order to rule out any other plausible explanations for the results.

  • Many people in the field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) share the belief that a revolution is under way. As MEMS begin to permeate more and more industrial procedures, not only engineering but society as a whole will be strongly affected. MEMS provide a new design technology that could rival, and perhaps even surpass, the societal impact of integrated circuits (ICs). Is this fact or fiction? If it is fact, then several questions must be asked.

  • How are pollutants transformed after their release into the environment? How are organisms exposed, and how do physiological alterations impact population dynamics and community structure? What direct or indirect impacts occur? As early as the 50s and 60s people living near industrial plants began to recognize undesirable changes in their environment - and to ask these very questions. The discipline of environmental toxicology addresses these questions.
