The marine environment

Microplastics present in high density in coastal marine environments have been reported by many published works worldwide. Microplastic presence poses a major threat to all organisms that come into direct contact with them in the aquatic environment because they are non-biodegradable and adsorbable to some toxic substances.

The increase in solid waste volume and change in composition due to urban development cause negative effects on the marine ecological environment. The aim of this study was to assess the amount of plastic waste leaking into the environment from the municipal solid waste (MSW) management system and propose mitigation measures towards sustainable development in Hue city, Viet Nam.

The sediment quality assessment showed that trace element concentrations were lower than the limited values in the sediment quality guideline (QCVN 43:2017/BTNMT). According to the Igeo index, the sediments were not polluted by Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Fe, and As but were likely polluted by Hg and Mn in some sampling sites. Therefore, it is necessary to invest the future studies to assess the Hg and Mn concentration levels in these sites to protect the marine environment.

The paper results showed that the more than ten years mangrove community is a stable forest biome. Mangroves from 10 years old should be planned with different species to increase the diversity in species structure and enhance the ability to stabilize the community and withstand changes in coastal habitats.

The aim of the work "Stochastic service life prediction of RC girders subjected to chloride induced corrosion – Shear limit state" presented in this thesis is service life prediction of corroded reinforced concrete girders, which forms an important part of durability design. The scope of this work is limited to shear limit state considering the chloride induced corrosion of reinforcement as the degradation mechanism. The review of literature shows that the service life estimation of reinforced concrete bridges exposed to marine environment is an active area of research.

The sedimentary record confirmed that microplastics have been accumulating in these estuaries since the early 1950s, and their abundances have increased greatly in more recent years in response to the progressive urbanization of the watersheds and intensification of land uses. Our results highlight the role of salt marsh sediments as sinks for microplastics in the marine environment.

Chloride diffusivity is an important factor affecting the durability of a reinforced concrete structure in the marine environment. Chloride permeability of concrete has been improved greatly by using superplasticising admixture and silica fume. From the mathematical model suggested by Tang Luping and Lars Olof Nilsson, the rapidly chloride diffusivity of concrete specimens could be determined.

Selenium is a trace element found in freshwater and the marine environ-ment. We show that it plays a major role in spicule formation in the demo-sponge Suberites domuncula. If added to primmorphs, an in vitro sponge cell culture system, it stimulates the formation of siliceous spicules. Using differential display of transcripts, we demonstrate that, after a 72-h expo-sure of primmorphs to selenium, two genes are up-regulated; one codes for selenoprotein M and the other for a novel spicule-associated protein....

Adaptation to extreme environments affects the stability and catalytic effi-ciency of enzymes, often endowing them with great industrial potential. We compared the environmental adaptation of the secreted endonuclease I from the cold-adapted marine fish pathogenVibrio salmonicida(VsEndA) and the human pathogen Vibrio cholerae (VcEndA).

Words can easily borrow, but the meaning of love from the heart of a people is difficult to describe. So I want to ask for forgiveness from the people that support can not be appreciated in the words and from those who, by any chance, I forgot to mention. First of all what I want to thank prof. dr.ir. Wind Herman and his wife - Joke. The interviews with prof. Wind held in Bangkok and his decision has helped me to be here, at the University of Twente, to carry out my doctoral research. Herman and Joke, I will never forget...

Average depth model has a variety of applications in hydraulic engineering, especially in applications that flow depth is much smaller than the width of the flow. In this method the vertical variation is negligible and the hydraulic variables average integrated from channel bed to the surface free for the vertical axis. in equations arising management, pure hydrostatic pressure is assumed that not really valid in the case of flow in the bed is curved and can not be described curvature effects of the bed.

Open ocean aquaculture is broadly defined as the rearing of marine organisms in exposed areas beyond significant coastal influence. Open ocean aquaculture employs less control over organisms and the surrounding environment than do inshore and land-based aquaculture, which are often undertaken in enclosures, such as ponds. When aquaculture operations are located beyond coastal state jurisdiction, within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ; generally 3 to 200 miles from shore), they are regulated primarily by federal agencies.

Aquaculture, also known as aquafarming, is the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic plants.[1][2] Aquaculture involves cultivating freshwater and saltwater populations under controlled conditions, and can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is the harvesting of wild fish.[3] Mariculture refers to aquaculture practiced in marine environments and in underwater habitats.

Streptococcal disease caused by Streptococcus iniae is without doubt one of the major bacterial diseases in fish. It has been reported to cause significant mortality in more than 12 different aquaculture species. Its distribution is worldwide in both freshwater and marine environments. The annual impact to aquaculture has been estimated to be over US$100 million. However, in the past, very few reports have described its presence in Asia.

Located in the South-East Asian region, thanks to an over 3400 km of coastline and 3000 islands in the Pacific Ocean, Vietnam is considered as a country has a great potential on marine and coastal economic development. From the North to the South of the country's coastal line, there are hundreds of aquaculture bases, many transshipment ports, fishing ports, tourist beaches, seaside resorts, petroindustrial plants,... that are contributed considerably to the Gross National Product.
