The Mekong River Delta of Vietnam

The Vietnam Mekong delta (VMD) is a tide-dominated delta formed by the Mekong river system. The sediments are dominantly fine grained and were deposited in the receiving basin with slight inclination of pre-existing deposits in the East sea and gulf of Thailand. The VMD is homeland to about 18 million people that exploit about 4-6 million m3 /day of groundwater mainly for domestic use.

The article is based on data from the research program "Greater Mekong Subregion Flood and Drought Risk Management and Mitigation Project (ADB-GMS1)" jointly implemented by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Vietnam Institute of Water Resources Research in Tien Giang and Dong Thap province.

After years of experimenting, the “One must do, five reductions” (1M5R) (in Vietnam referred to as 1P5G), is being promoted by Vietnam’s Department of Crop Production as an advanced technique in rice production. Nevertheless, a certain proportion of rice farmers in the Mekong Delta are reluctant to implement 1M5R.

Vietnam and Cambodia have same significant strategic benefits in the Mekong Delta. And, the trans-boundary dimension and respective management issues are highline agenda of them. Although, the economic development of each country is different in the boundary region of Mekong Delta, two countries have a same problems as from the natural hazard (including flood, drought, acid sulphate soils, and saltwater intrusion) to the impact of upstream development, a myriad of flood controlling infrastructure, and the implications of climate change.

The study’s results will help the managers find the relationship between internal marketing and employee commitment in the Mekong River Delta provinces, Vietnam, at the same time understand the employee, employee’s expectations for their organisation. Therefore, they will propose the orientations to more developmental than human, finding solutions to improve the level of internal marketing and employee commitment in the case of limited resources.

A compilation of depositional facies and 14C ages from the two new cores (DT2, and DT4 cores) considerably contribute to clarify the Holocene evolution of the paleo Mekong River (MR) incised valley, Mekong River Delta (MRD). The longitudial section documents the geometric features indicating the different gradients along the paleo-Mekong incised valley from the Cambodian lowerlands through delta plain up to the shallow offshore of the MRD.

The paleo-geographical reconstructions are obtained from the interpolated MRD sea-level curve, depositional facies and Pleistocene surface topography of the former and new cores in the MRD and surrouding shallow offshore. The paleo-geography of the MRD is distinguished by four stages corresponding to sea-levels of -32m/10 ka, -4m/8.0ka, +1.6m/6.0ka and +1m/4.0 ka.

This research aims to estimate willingness to pay (WTP) of farmers for insurance against flood hazards using a choice experiment with special care of attribute non-attendance and effects coding method. In addition, some challenges and opportunities are identified to provide new insights for policy makers into the design of a flood insurance market. A random sample of 374 households in the Mekong river delta was collected in the year 2015.

The Ma river delta located in the North Central of VietNam is the third largest ones in Vietnam following the Mekong Delta and the Red River Delta. However, there are not many researches on sedimentary. This study aims to determine the Characteristics of the Holocene sedimentary facies in coastal plain of the Song Ma Delta based on observation of sedimentary structure and analysis of grain size, diatom, flora, pollen and 14C dating collected for the drill core (LKTH2 borehole) from the coastal plain of the Song Ma river delta.

Beneficial plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have been reasonably applied to rescue crucial issue for agriculture by salinity soil. Observed most of PGPB was found in endophyte, rhizosphere and soil. Indole acetic acid (IAA)-producing bacteria could naturally stimulate and facilitate plant growth. Report on a large crocodile skull recovered from a river bank in August 2010 near Dau Sau Bridge, in An Binh, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho Province, in southern Vietnam. As the skull from Can Tho, named “Dau Sau” herein, is now deposited in the Vietnam National Museum of Nature, Ha Noi, we reinvestigated the circumstances surrounding its discovery and provide exact measurements. Skull length (dorsal mid-point) is 70.7 cm.

Consequences of saline intrusion are not only increasing pressure to people’s livelihoods, but also leading to unstable food security. This paper is a monograph review of two sides of energy sector industrialisation in the MD with a focus on ‘green’ and ‘grey’ socio-economic development (as ‘xanh’ and ‘xám’ in Vietnamese respectively). ‘Green’ energy is understood as the electricity generated from inexhaustible sources and known as renewable energy. It emits fewer greenhouse gases and causes less harm to habitats in comparison to traditional fossil fuels and hydropower. ‘Grey’ energy is another word for non-renewable energy or polluting energy, which can have negative effects on human health, environment, and climate.

The origin and chemistry of the groundwater in the middle Pleistocene (qp2 3 ), lower Pleistocene (qp1 ), upper Pliocene (n2 2 ), lower Pliocene (n2 1 ), and the Miocene (n1 3 ) in the Mekong river delta (MKRD) were investigated by using isotopic and geochemical techniques. The origin of the groundwater was evaluated based on the composition of the water stable isotopes (d2 H and d18O) in the local precipitation, in water from the rivers system, and in the groundwater samples.

Rice is the most important crop of Vietnam with a harvested area of 7,835 ha, production of 45.2 million tons of paddies, and export volume of 6,997 thousand tons of milled rice for an export value of USD 2,852 million in 2015. However, if purely considering its economic aspects, rice contributes only 5.45% of national GDP1 and rice farmer’s net income is only USD 419/ha compared to USD 1,128/ha earnings of Thailand farmers. Moreover, it is projected that up to 16.8% of the Red River Delta and 38.9% of the Mekong River Delta will be submerged after sea level rises by 100 cm.
