Clavicle fracture is one of the most common injuries of the shoulder girdle. Malunion with angulation or shortening following fractures could cause significant functional deficits of the shoulder. Many kinds of treatment, such as conservative treatments (figure-of-eight bandage, arm sling) or surgeries (fixation with an intramedullary nail, a Kirschner wire, or plates and screws), are described to have their pros and cons for clavicle fractures.

The authors develop a system of differential equations describing the motion of the structural system equipped with DFP bearings. The Runge-Kutta numerical method, specifically the ode15s function in MATLAB, was used to solve these equations. The results of the calculations provide a comparison of the damping efficiency of the structural system with and without the use of DFP bearings, assessing the effectiveness of vibration isolation during an earthquake, with three components X, Y, and vertical considered.

Anharmonic effective potential, local force constant and correlation effects in XAFS of BCC crystals
Analytical expressions for the anharmonic effective potential, local force constant, Displacement-displacement Correlation Function (DCF) CR and Debye-Waller factor described by the Mean Square Relative Displacement (MSRD) σ2 and by the Mean Square Displacement (MSD) u2of bcc crystals in the X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) have been derived. The effective interatomic potential of the system has been considered by taking into account the influences of nearest atomic neighbors, and it contains the Morse potential characterizing the interaction of each pair of atoms.

Regulator of G-protein signaling (RGS) proteins were originally identified as negative regulators of G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling via their GTPase-accelerating protein (GAP) activity. All RGS proteins contain evolutionarily conserved RGS domain; however, they differ in their size and regulatory domains. RGS1 and RGS10 are smaller than other RGS proteins, and their functions involve various inflammatory responses including autoimmune responses in both the periphery and the central nervous system (CNS). Neuroinflammation is the chronic inflammatory response in the CNS.

To establish stable cell lines that produce recombinant multisubunit proteins, it is usually necessary to cotransfect cells with several independent gene constructs. Here, we show that a stepwise fusion of individually transfected cells, results in a fused cell-line that secretes a complete multisubunit protein. Functional expression of recombinant multisubunit proteins may require a defined expression ratio between each protein subunit. The cell-fusion technology described allows a predefined expression level of each subunit.

Thefushi tarazu factor 1 (FTZ-F1) nuclear receptor sub-family comprises orphan receptors with crucial roles in development and sexual differentiation in vertebrates and invertebrates. We describe the structure and functional properties of an FTZ-F1 from the platyhelminth parasite of humans,Schistosoma mansoni, the first receptor from this family tobe characterized inaLophotrochozoan. It contains awell conservedDNA-binding domain (55–63%identity to other family members) and a poorly conserved ligand-binding domain (20% identity to that of zebrafish FF1a)....

This paper describes the cloning of the genes coding for each component of the complex of toluene/o-xylene monooxy-genase fromPseudomonas stutzeriOX1, their expression, purification and characterization. Moreover, the reconsti-tution of the active complex from the recombinant subunits has been obtained, and the functional role of each compo-nent in the electron transfer from the electron donor to molecular oxygen has been determined.

ATP-regenerating enzymes may have an important role in maintaining ATP levels in mitochondria-like kinetoplast organelle and glycosomes in parasitic protozoa. Adenylate kinase (AK) (ATP:AMP phosphotransferase) catalyses the reversible transfer of thec-phosphate group from ATP to AMP, releasing twomolecules ofADP. This study describes cloningand functional characterizationof the gene encoding AK2fromagenomic libraryofLeishmaniadonovaniandalso its expression in leishmania promastigote cultures.

Several transcription factors with the function of setting the biological clock in vertebrates have been described. A detailed understanding of their nucleocytolasmic transport properties may uncover novel aspects of the regulation of the circadian rhythm. This assumption led us to perform a systematic analysis of the nuclear import characteristics of the different murine PER and CRY proteins, usingXenopusoocytes and HeLa cells as experimental systems.

Death inducer obliterator protein 1 [DIDO1; also termed DIO-1 and death-associated transcription factor 1 (DATF-1)] is encoded by a gene thus far described only in higher vertebrates. Current gene ontology descriptions for this gene assign its function to an apoptosis-related pro-cess. The protein presents distinct splice variants and is distributed ubiqui-tously.

Replication protein A (RPA), a heterotrimeric protein composed of 70, 32 and 14-kDa subunits, has been shown to be essential for DNA replication, repair, recombination, and transcription. Previously, we found that, in two seed plants, rice and Arabidopsis, there are two different types of RPA70-kDa subunit. Substantial biochemical and genetic characterization of these two subunits, termed OsRPA70aand OsRPA70bor AtRPA70a and AtRPA70b, respectively, is described in this report.
