Tomato caused by Alternaria solani
-
Early blight is the most devastating disease of tomato it is caused by pathogens i.e. Alternaria solani. In tropical and subtropical countries it creates hazardous effect. It is also a common problem in United Kingdom, Australia, India, Nepal and United States. It is one of the most common foliar diseases of tomatoes. The disease can occur over a wide range of climatic conditions, but is most prominent in areas with heavy dew, rainfall and high relative humidity. Every year sever disease appears in north India.

The yield losses in the range of 48-80 per cent due to early blight (Alternaria solani) damage in tomato were reported from India, Canada, USA and Nigeria (Basu, 1974; Datar and Mayee, 1984; Mathur and Shekhawat, 1986; Sherf and MacNab, 1986; Gwary and Nahunnarao, 1998 and Pandey and Pandey, 2002). The annual economic yield losses due to early blight have been estimated at 79% (Adhikari and Panthee, 2017).

In vitro evaluation of three contact and five systemic and two combination was carried out under laboratory condition in 2018-19 at Department of Plant Pathology, College of Horticulture, Mysuru by using Potato Dextrose Agar medium (PDA) as basal medium and six biocontrol agents were evaluated through dual culture technique. The result revealed that, there was significant difference among the fungicides in inhibiting the radial growth of the A. solani.

Tomato crop is affected by different fungal pathogens and most devastating pathogen is Alternaria solani causing early blight disease and reducing the yield. Among different new chemical combinations, Azoxystrobin (11%) + Tebuconazole (18.3%) found effective in lowering the disease severity throughout the growing period of the crop.

The early blight caused by Alternaria solani is a severe constraint in tomato production and the disease intensity has been increasing day by day for the last few years in India due to changes in the environment. The field experiment was carried out to understand the development of early blight on tomato with respect to weather conditions during kharif 2018-19 at AAU, Anand.

Tomato is one of the most extensively cultivated vegetables and is a rich source of nutrients such as vitamins, antioxidants and minerals for a balanced human diet. World over, early blight (EB) caused by Alternaria solani Sorauer is limiting tomato production and causes great losses. In total, 350 tomato genotypes from ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR), New Delhi were evaluated for early blight resistance under epiphytotic conditions at ICARIndian Institute of Vegetable Research (ICAR-IIVR), Varanasi.

Studies were undertaken to evaluate the plant extracts, fungicides and bio-agents against early blight disease of tomato caused by Alternaria solani under in vitro and vivo conditions. Among the four evaluated plant extracts against A. solani, neem leaf extract at 15% (w/v) was found to be most effective in inhibiting the mycelial growth of the pathogen with inhibition of 52.36 per cent, followed by combination of garlic clove and green chilli extract with the inhibition of 50.42 per cent.

Early blight is potentially destructive disease in tomato occurring on the oldest leaves as small, brownish which are due to foliar blight disease and it was caused by a foliar fungal pathogen Alternaria solani. The disease causes considerable yield as well as post-harvest losses. A. solani produced blackish, fluffy mycelium with septate, beaked conidia on PDA Eight plant extracts and four biocontrol agents were evaluated following poison food technique and dual culture.

Tomato crop exhibited symptoms occurring on the oldest leaves as small, brownish to black lesions which are due to foliar blight disease and it was caused by a complex of mycoflora viz, Alternaria solani, Fusarium oxysporum and Curvularia lunata. The disease complex causes considerable yield as well as post-harvest losses. A. solani produced blackish, fluffy mycelium with septate, beaked conidia on PDA. Fusarium oxysporum exhibited dull to fluffy white mycelium with slight faint reddish tinge at the middle.

The efficacy of some fungicides like carbendazim 12 % + mancozeb 63 % WP, difenoconazole 25 EC, propiconazole 25 EC along with commonly used fungicides viz., mancozeb 75 WP, propineb 70 WP, copper-oxy-chloride 50 % WP and one botanical Azadirachta indica (neem) leaf extract (20%) were tested against early blight of tomato cv. Abhinav at Agricultural Research Station, Ladol, Gujarat. A variant with no application of fungicide was used as a control. All fungicide treatments reduce the disease intensity as compared to untreated check.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is the third most important crop in India that suffers from various biotic and abiotic stresses. Among the biotic stresses early blight caused by Alternaria solani [(Ell. and Mart.) Jones and Grout] is one of the most destructive diseases of tomato which leads losses up to 78 per cent. In the present study efficacy of cow by product and fungicides were evaluated against the pathogen in vitro and in vivo conditions.

Effect of different temperature, pH levels, and light intensity were tested against the growth of Alternaria solani under in vitro conditions. Mycelium growth and sporulation of Alternaria solani was significantly influenced with temperature. Maximum colony growth was recorded at 25oC followed by 30oC and minimum colony growth was recorded at 40oC. Excellent sporulation was noticed at 20oC and 25oC temperature.

Alternaria leaf blight of tomato caused by Alternaria solani is a soil inhabiting and airborne pathogen responsible for considerable loss in tomato production. In the absence of resistant cultivars, the use of fungicides and biocontrol agents to control the disease is one exercise training. When there is an epidemic outbreak for some reason, perhaps the use of fungicides are one of the best options available. These fungicides must be used judiciously according to the need, type of body involved and availability of new fungicides.

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is an important vegetable crop which is grown all over the world. Early blight of tomato, caused by Alternaria solani is one of the most important diseases in tomato. Two fungicides i.e. Mancozeb 75 WP and Hexaconazole 5 EC at different concentrations (0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3%), two bio-agents viz., Trichoderma harzianum and T. koningii and two botanicals i.e.
