  • Stereopsis is a vision process whose geometrical foundation has been known for a long time, ever since the experiments by Wheatstone, in the 19th century. Nevertheless, its inner workings in biological organisms, as well as its emulation by computer systems, have proven elusive, and stereo vision remains a very active and challenging area of research nowadays. In this volume we have attempted to present a limited but relevant sample of the work being carried out in stereo vision by researchers from around the world.

  • This volume has two first authors because it is a result of very intensive teamwork between the two authors. We have had three brainstorm meetings, each of approximately one week’s duration. There have been numerous pingpong games (questions–answers–new proposals etc.) on the Internet. All the chapters have major contributions from both of us. We hope that the volume therefore demonstrates a synergistic effect, reflecting the positive teamwork that is behind the volume.

  • Having private health insurance obviously also improves access to needed care at the right time if no other form of health coverage is available and “safety-net” providers (who provide services irrespective of ability to pay) are in the minority. In the United States, there is evidence suggesting that uninsured individuals wait to receive treatment until they need emergency care – for which hospitals are under an obligation to provide services to those in need – but obtain less primary and preventative services (Docteur et al., 2003).

  • This short design guide on food technology rooms in secondary schools has been produced to help schools plan and deliver these facilities. It is based on Building Bulletin 811 , updating the information relating to food. The guidance is intended mainly for schools, designers and local authorities, particularly those involved in Building Schools for the Future (BSF). It covers all aspects of planning and designing successful food technology rooms to ensure suitable spaces for delivering each school’s requirements.

  • The crisis has shown that securitization is heavily dependent on markets’ perceptions and could be subject to sudden bouts of illiquidity generated from investors’ concerns. Namely the consequences of the increased participation in bank funding by financial markets’ investors and the large increases in securitized assets, can led to acute liquidity crises.

The molecular mass of the cellulase was estimated to be 66 000 Da by SDS/PAGE, thus the enzyme was named HdEG66. The hydrolytic activity of HdEG66 toward carb-oxymethylcellulose showed optimal temperature and pH at 38Cand 6.3, respectively.

  • During cell intoxication by diphtheria toxin, endosome acidification trig-gers the translocation of the catalytic (C) domain into the cytoplasm. This event is mediated by the translocation (T) domain of the toxin. Previous work suggested that the T domain acts as a chaperone for the C domain during membrane penetration of the toxin.

  • The prokaryotic ATP-citrate lyase is considered to be a key enzyme of the carbon dioxide-fixing reductive tricarboxylic acid (RTCA) cycle. Kinetic examination of the ATP-citrate lyase from the green sulfur bacterium Chlorobium limicola (Cl-ACL), an a4b4 heteromeric enzyme, revealed that the enzyme displayed typical Michaelis-Menten kinetics toward ATP with an apparent Km value of 0.21 ± 0.04 mM. However, strong negative cooperativity was observed with respect to citrate binding, with a Hill coefficient (nH) of 0.45. ...

  • The K103N substitution is a frequently observed HIV-1 RT mutation in patients who do not respond to combinationtherapy. The drugs Efavirenz, MSC194 and PNU142721 belong to the recent generation of NNRTIs characterized by an improved resistance profile to the most common single point mutations within HIV-1 RT, including the K103N mutation. In the present study we present structural observations from Efavirenz in complex with wild-type protein and the K103N mutant and PNU142721 and MSC194 in complex with the K103N mutant.

  • Soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics in croplands is a crucial component of global carbon (C) cycle. Depending on local environmental conditions and management practices, typical C input is generally required to reduce or reverse C loss in agricultural soils. Changes in the soil organic carbon (SOC) stock are determined by the balance between the carbon input from organic materials and the output from the decomposition of soil C. The fate of SOC in cropland soils plays a significant role in both sustainable agricultural production and climate change mitigation.
