Inversion of the uterus is a rare gynecological condition. The majority of reported cases were encountered in the immediate postpartum period. A non-puerperal inversion occurs when the uterus acts to expel a submucous lesion attached to the fundus, such as uterine fibroid, endometrial carcinoma, sarcoma or polyp.

Desmoid tumors are rare lesions. Although they demonstrate tumor characteristics, such as infiltrative growth and tendency towards local recurrence, they lack the ability to metastasize. To date, the cause of desmoid tumors is unknown. They can occur in both sexes, but predominant slightly in women, including nulliparous women, of reproductive age, but mostly during and after pregnancy.

Uterine fibroids are the most common benign pelvic tumors in women of reproductive age. They affect 20–40% of those women1 but are found in 75% of hysterectomy specimens2. This is due to the mones fact that most fibroids are asymptomatic. Estimate of prevalence would need to be based on oultrasound screening.

Female infertility is most often caused by problems with ovulation (40%) or fallopian tubes (40%). Other possible causes include endometriosis, in which the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, premature ovarian failure, in which a woman’s ovaries stop functioning before she reaches the age of forty, and uterine fibroids. Women who were exposed in the womb to diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen prescribed to women from 1938-1971, have had an increased risk of infertility. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) also play a major role in infertility.

About one-third of American women will eventually have a hysterectomy, the second most common surgery after cesarean section. Why so common? Basically, hysterectomy can cure a variety of uterine problems: ✿ Fibroids. Hysterectomy is most often recommended for serious cases of fibroids (benign tumors that grow in the uterus wall). Fibroids can grow large and may cause great pain and heavy bleeding. Depending on the severity, physicians and patients may decide to try treatments other than hysterectomy. In a surgery called myomectomy, the fibroids are removed but the uterus stays in place.
