Variability in progenies

Forest trees can occupy extensive geography and environmentally highly variable areas which result in high genetic variability in the direction of pressure from natural selection. At the same time, the majority of conifer species are wind-pollinated from both short and long distances, resulting in wide-spread gene flow, which can lead to maladaptation to local conditions.

Two hundred progenies of four crosses of rice were evaluated to study the genetic variability in segregating generations for yield and bran oil content. The data was recorded on five randomly selected plants for ten quantitative and four grain quality characters. The analysis of variance showed significant differences for 14 characters studied, indicating the presence of high genetic variability among the progenies.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is one of the important oilseed crop, with comparatively narrow genetic base. To broaden the genetic base wild species have been used through wide hybridization. Generally wide hybridization comes with linkage drags which contribute several undesirable traits to cultivated species. In the present study, comparative analysis of backcross (BC2F3) and selfed (BC1F4) progenies was carried out to know the extent of variability in desirable direction created in both the generation derived from wide hybridization.

The changing climate adversely affect the morphological characters of plant which, ultimate effect the identification of off types in seed production programme. This also leads to effect the genetic purity in seed production programme. To overcome this problem selection of progeny and its breeding depend upon the genetic variability in population.

The present study was conducted to assess variability paramters for ten quantitative characters including seed yield per plant in mung bean utilizing thirty progenies of F4 population derived from two crosses viz., Meha x GJM-1006 (17 progenies) and Meha x GJM-1008 (13 progenies). Randomized Block Design with three replications was used and each genotype was planted on a spacing of 60 cm x 15 cm.

An investigation was undertaken to evaluate forty three progenies from F5generation of Lablab bean along with one local check for estimation of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance. A wide range of variation was observed for yield and its component traits among the progenies under study. Highest and lowest coefficient variation was noticed in the seed yield per plant and days to maturity respectively.

The present investigation on mean and variability was conducted on genetically diverse thirty F2 progenies of chilli. The observation were recorded on the following traits, plant height, branches per plant, days to 50% flowering, fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit girth, individual fresh fruit weight, individual dry pod weight, fresh fruit yield per plant and dry pod yield per plant. Significant difference was observed among the crosses and also within the crosses for all the traits.

Availability of variability for yield and related traits is limited in the cultivated germplasm of chickpea. So the evaluation of backcross and F2 population derived from the cross of chickpea variety GPF2 with 2 accessions of its wild relative Cicer reticulatum viz., EC556270 and ILWC21 was done for yield and related traits. A wide variation was observed for all the characters. There were progenies out yielded the parents in most of the characters.

In Kagzi lime the existing variability is less due to the problem of polyembryony which suppresses the zygotic seedlings. However, to some extent variation is seen in the seedling progeny with respect to morphological, physico–chemical parameters and also in productivity. In any crop, the improvement by selection method involves identification of prosperous types from a genetic stock or population. This can be from homogeneous population of heterozygous individuals in vegetatively propagated crops or from a population resulting from hybridization.

Genetic variability, heritability and correlation at genotypic and phenotypic levels and path analysis were studied for various yield and its component characters in seventy five S6 progenies along with five checks of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) during Rabi, 2009-10. Analysis of variance revealed significant difference for all the characters indicating the presence of good amount of variability in the S6 progenies studied. The estimates of GCV along with PCV, heritability and genetic advance as percentage of mean were higher for seed yield per plant.
