Aim of the thesis: Development of a new method for determining concentration of the radionuclides in enviromental samples by mean of gamma spectroscopy. Establishing a data set of the soil-plant transfer factor (TF) of radionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K for some vegetables in Truong Sa island and that of 238U, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs for tea tree from Luong My farm, Hoa Binh province, Vietnam and evaluate the influence of natural radionuclide concentration to the soil-plant transfer process of artificial radionuclide 137Cs.

Viet Nam is a developing country and as such has a low level of vegetable oil consumption. Vegetable oils are an important source of calories in the human diet providing 38 kJ/g compared to 17.8 kJ/g for protein and carbohydrate. Vegetable oil consumption in Viet Nam is increasing and calories obtained from vegetable oils is likely to increase from 15-20% of the total diet to 35-45% as incomes increase and as government policies are implemented. Every year Viet Nam must import a large quantity of crude oil for processing. However, Viet Nam is an agricultural country with the potential to...

The major aims of this project centred around building capacity in protected cropping systems, trialling these systems with tomatoes and cucumbers in Vietnam and introducing farmers and other supply chain partners to these systems. As such, the emphasis was never intended to be on improving supply chains, merely examining current vegetable supply chains and determining the major problems. This milestone was added to the project after the original design and in-fact was extracted from another CARD project and added into this project.

Protected cropping provides vegetable growers with an opportunity to enhance product quality and improve food safety. The overall objective of this project was to provide Vietnamese scientists and extension specialists with the training and tools to implement and foster regionally feasible improvements to current vegetable production practices and supply chains. This was achieved through: 1) greenhouse replicated experiments and demonstration trials in Northern, Central and Southern Vietnam; 2) four in-country workshops and 3) two Australian study tours for research and extension personnel.

The fruit industry in Vietnam has a great potential and plays an important role in agricultural production. In 2003, Vietnam exported US$43 million of high value fruit to high-income countries and imported US$14 million of fruit and vegetables. Vietnam is experiencing difficulties in competing with other Asian nations in export markets and its own domestic market, especially with China and Thailand. This suggests that Vietnam’s horticultural industries require substantial development to be globally competitive. Vietnamese consumers are demanding safer and higher quality fruit.

The objective of this program is to improve Vietnam’s capacity for teaching and conducting research in modern horticultural crop production with a particular focus on vegetables. This should enhance the ability of Vietnam to promote rural development in these industries and improve the efficiency of and quality of vegetable production. The project aims to achieve this by:

This project will enhance the capacity in Vietnam to 'train the trainers', extension workers and staff responsible for the maintenance of quality of commodities during storage and marketing. PHTI will provide flexible integrated courses on various aspects of post-harvest commodity quality management, with particular attention to containment and loss reduction. The training group will also be able to develop new training modules applicable to contaminant reduction in fruit and vegetables as strategies for monitoring and management of contaminants in vegetables are further developed....

Fresh fruit and vegetables have become a major part of Vietnam’s crop production, and have the potential to provide major export revenue. To enable Vietnam to exploit these markets and meet the stringent quality standards required, much greater attention needs to be placed on better postharvest handling, safety and packaging of fresh produce.
