  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels are a strong inverse predictor of cardiovascular events. However, it is not clear whether this association is maintained at very low levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. METHODS A post hoc analysis of the recently completed Treating to New Targets (TNT) study assessed the predictive value of HDL cholesterol levels in 9770 patients.

  • In order to meet the increasing demand for valve-regulated lead–acid ŽVRLA. batteries, a new soft lead has been produced by Pasminco Metals. In this material, bismuth is increased to a level that produces a significant improvement in battery cycle life. By contrast, other common impurities, such as arsenic, cobalt, chromium, nickel, antimony and tellurium, that are known to be harmful to VRLA batteries are controlled to very low levels. A bismuth ŽBi.-bearing oxide has been manufactured ŽBarton-pot method. ...

  • Risk Assessment Vaccines are considered safe when the risk of use is judged to be acceptable in relation to the benefits. For vaccines given to healthy individuals for diseases that are no longer common, acceptable risks are set at very low levels—indeed, far lower than for most medical products. However, "safety" does not and cannot ever mean "zero risk." The determination of safety is thus based on a scientific assessment of the data and a considered judgment of all the issues involved, including benefits and risks.

  • More recently the results of the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) (Thompson et al. 2003) demonstrated that there is no PSA threshold below which one can confidently exclude a diagnosis of prostate cancer. The PCPT trial protocol required “normal” men with very low levels of PSA to be biopsied at the end of the trial and it was observed that 39.2% of men with a PSA 2.1-3.0 ng/mL, 27.7% of men with a PSA 1.1-2.0 ng/mL, and 16.3% of men with a PSA

  • There are other interesting parallels: In both countries, changes in investment ratios seem not to have been triggered by changes in household savings ratios, but have shown separate trends: In Germany, the investment-to-GDP ratio rose from 1951 to 1954 from 20 to 25 per cent, and hovered between 23 and 25 per cent until the late 1960s. The household savings rate, on the other hand, started from a very low level of just 4 per cent of disposable income in 1950 (which even translates into a lower share of GDP as disposable income is only a share of GDP) a...

  • There is increasing evidence that health effects occur at very low levels of PM, and without an apparent threshold. This evidence arises from studies, initially in the US, but which have more recently been carried out in Europe and elsewhere with similar conclusions. These studies have, in general, used different measures of particles, but the majority have used PM10 and the Group felt that this was the most appropriate measure for a limit value for particles at the present time.

  • Based on past WPI inflation data, we see that every time the real rate turned positive, the regulator reduced the SB rate 1 , never to take corrective action (in terms of increasing the SB rate) even on subsequent high negative real rates. Chart 1 provides this picture in very clear terms. From 2003 to 2009 the real rates on SB accounts remained at historically low levels and persisted there for six years. Barring the transitory reversal in end 2009, this high negative real rate continues to pinch the small savers till date. One can clearly see that at least during April...

  • It is accepted globally that a “leaner” yet ‘bigger’ dairy industry is much more productive than small farm holdings. Contrary to this belief we suggest mechanization is not an alternative but can be a complement to smallholding farms. Mechanization is understood as loss of jobs for farmers. This may be true for the crop sector; however, in dairy farming this is not always the case. Given Pakistan’s spread of smallholdings and very low level of existing mechanization; job losses are unlikely to happen.

  • A severe challenge to the idea that mitochondrial DNA mutations play a major role in the aging process in mammals is that clear loss-of-function mutations accumulate only to very low levels (under 1% of total) in almost any tissue, even by very old age. Their accumulation is punctate: some cells become nearly devoid of wild-type mitochondrial DNA and exhibit no activity for the partly mitochondrially encoded enzyme cytochrome c oxidase. Such cells accumulate in number with aging, suggesting that they survive indefinitely, which is itself paradoxical....

  • One of the international challenges is to actually create an infrastructure in many countries that constructs schools and equips them with trained teachers so children can experience a basic education. The UN millennium development goals reflect this and great progress is being made on access to a universal basic education. However it is a modest goal that, for example, doesn’t necessarily apply to teenagers.

  • Tumor suppressor protein p53 plays a central role in maintaining genomic integrity [1–3]. In unstimulated cells p53 is maintained at very low levels but in response to DNA damage or other stress stimuli, such as hypoxia or activation of oncogenes, p53 becomes stabilized and accumulates in the cell [4, 5]. p53 can exert its tumor suppressor function in different ways (Fig. 1.1).

  • The annual summer warming of the Arctic in 2008 was watched closely by an army of expert observers and other interested parties around the world. Organisations such as the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)3 published neardaily updates on the state of the Arctic sea ice, which every year recedes from its winter maximum as the summer comes to the far north. The reason for this scrutiny was the record low level of Arctic sea ice extent observed in summer 2007, when an area of ice nearly the size of Alaska melted.

  • Chemical doping nitrogen in to TiO2 crystal network by methods of sol-gel and impregnation was presented. The obtained nitrogen-doped TiO2 materials were characterized by different techniques such as XRD, SEM, UV-VIS. It was shown that samples have very uniform nano size, anatas structure and low level of band-gap energy (Ebg ~ 2.2 eV, ~ 500 - 600 nm). Their activity and kinetic were also studied and the results proved that in comparison with P25, the obtained nitrogen-doped TiO2 had higher activity and photo-quantum efficiency in organic disintegrated reaction under solar radiation.

Most IVF centers organize the evaluation by using a checklist that the nurse coordinator and physician assure is complete before proceeding with the cycle. As they describe the north Indian demographic regime, it involves relatively high levels of fertility and infant mortality, relatively early age at marriage (which is almost universal in north India), and relatively large gender gaps in health indicators.
