The research herein builds on the work of Rojek (2003) and further investigates the bioremediation of NOM wastes. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of selected white-rot fungi and yeast for the biodegradative removal of concentrated NOM from solution. The effectiveness of the white-rot fungus P. chrysosporium ATCC 34541 for the biological degradation of different batches of MIEXTM NOM concentrate and the effects of different characteristics of the NOM on the process and thus the resistance of the NOM to microbial removal were investigated.

The main aims of the project were to firstly find out or identify barriers that are inhibiting builders from installing greywater systems and secondly to identify and formulate strategies to reduce or eliminate the barriers identified. The main barriers for builders are; high cost, government regulations, lack of builder awareness or knowledge, and low client demand.

A simple and inexpensive method was developed using liquid - liquid extraction, together with high performance chromatographic method for determination of methoxyfenozide residues in grapes. The evaluated parameters include the extracts by distilled water and acetonitrile solvents. The method was validated using grapes samples spiked with methoxyfenozide at different fortification levels (0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 µg/g). Average recoveries (using each concentration three replicates) ranged 86-95 %, with relative standard deviations less than 5%, calibration solutions concentration in the range 0.

To investigate how solubility and steric issues affect the laccase-catalysedoxidationof phenols, a series of oligomeric polyphenol compounds, having increasing size and decreasing solubility in water, was incubated with laccase. The extent of substrate conversion, and the nature of the products formed in buffered aqueous solutions, were com-pared to those obtained in the presence of an organic cosolvent, and also in the presence of twomediating species, i.e. N-hydroxyphthalimide (HPI) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidin-1-yloxy (TEMPO). ...

Nacre organic matrix has been conventionally classified as both water-soluble and water-insoluble,basedonits solubility in aqueous solutions after decalcificationwith acid or EDTA. Some characteristics (aspartic acid-rich, silk-fibroin-like content) were specifically attributed to either one or the other. The comparative study on the technique of extraction (extraction with water alone vs. demineralization with EDTA) presented here, seems to reveal that this gen-erally accepted classification may need to be reconsidered....

The high-resolution 3D structure of the octapeptide hor-mone angiotensin II (AII) in aqueous solution has been obtained bysimulated annealing calculations, using high-resolutionNMR-derived restraints. After final refinement in explicit water, a familyof 13 structures was obtained with a backbone RMSD of 0.73 ± 0.23 A˚ . AII adopts a fairly compact folded structure, with its C-terminus and N-ter-minus approaching towithin7.2 A ˚ of eachother.

Previous results showed that mRNA encoding a putative aquaporin (AQP) (GenBankaccession number AF218314) is present in the tracheolar cells associated with female Aedes aegyptiMalpighian tubules. In this study, immuno-histochemistry detected the protein,AeaAQP, also in tra-cheolar cells, suggesting its involvement in water movement in the respiratory system. When expressed in Xenopus oocytes,AeaAQP increased the osmotic water permeability from15·10 )6 to 150 ·10 )6 mÆs )1 , whichwas inhibited by mercury ions. No permeability to glycerol or other solute was observed....
