This study was aimed to: (1) develop a rapid assessment method to control the impact of plastic waste on aquatic life and water quality in various water bodies; and, (2) contribute the development and refinement of a comprehensive set of monitoring tools and indicators, particularly for field research and rapid assessments.

The study recommended implementing centralized wastewater treatment systems in priority areas, promoting sustainable land management practices, and supporting environmentally friendly agricultural and livestock farming methods.

This study investigated trace essential metals (Cu, Zn and Cr) and non-essential metals (Pb, Cd and Hg) in water, sediment and tissues of water spinach, snake head fish and swamp eel from the Saigon River. Sampling was conducted from January to December 2004 at three sites. Three water and sediment samples, edible parts of twenty water spinach (Ipomea aquatica) samples (leaves and stems), twenty snake head fish (Channa striata) and twenty swamp eels (Monopterus albus) were collected at each site.

This research concludes with a discussion on the potential effects on river water quality due to dry weather spills, the impact of rainfall intensity and their potential to mobilize the microbial contamination and move towards a stormwater drain and be transported to a nearby water course. Overall, the objectives of this study were achieved and the transport of microbes can be estimated at different elapsed times depending on the relative humidity after a dry weather spill event, providing its impact on waterways.
