In this paper, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) scheme is proposed for permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind turbine systems. With this method, an adaptive compensation control is considered to improve the system dynamic response and therefore more energy yield can be extracted from the wind turbine, depending on a trade-off between the system dynamic behavior and the transient load of the drive train.

This paper presents a simple carrier based PWM technique to control a hybrid multilevel inverter. A conventional 3-level NPC inverter and 2-level inverter are connected in series to supply an open-end winding three phase load. Proposed PWM method is then verified in steady state and dynamic transient phenomena using MATLAB simulation program.

For a robust voltage control of the system, controllers of proportional and integral type have been incorporated for AVR of the excitation system of the synchronous generator and SVC. The controller parameters are optimized using firefly algorithm (FA). Through rigorous rural electrification projects, over 99.97% of Bhutan’s households now have access to electricity, which is predominantly generated from run-of-the-river hydropower plants. Despite this achievement, around 5% of the rural households still do not have access to electricity to meet their cooking load demands and, therefore, they extensively rely on firewood, LPG, and kerosene for cooking purposes. Apart from hydropower, penetration of other renewable sources such as solar and wind power in the country is negligible.
