Part 2 book "Antimicrobial resistance - In bacteria from livestock and companion animals" includes content: Antimicrobial resistance in pasteurellaceae of veterinary origin, antimicrobial resistance in bordetella bronchiseptica, antimicrobial resistance in clostridium and brachyspira spp. and other anaerobes, antimicrobial resistance in leptospira, brucella, and other rarely investigated veterinary and zoonotic pathogens,.... and other contents.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Gram-negative bacteria. It has variable manifestations (gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, skeletal). Neurobrucellosis may develop at any stage of the disease (acute, subacute, and chronic phases) and affects the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases are increasingly recognized as a cause of disease in dogs worldwide. The epidemiology of ticks and tick-transmitted protozoa and bacteria has changed due to the spread of ticks to urban and peri-urban areas and the movement of infected animals, posing new risks for animals and humans.

The application of next-generation molecular, biochemical and immunological methods for developing new vaccines, antimicrobial compounds, probiotics and prebiotics for zoonotic infection control has been fundamental to the understanding and preservation of the symbiotic relationship between animals and humans.

Most vector-borne pathogens cause zoonotic diseases. These zoonoses often have wild animal reservoirs that play a significant role in disease epidemiology. However, pet animals have also been implicated in transmission of zoonotic agents to humans. To exemplify, dogs are competent reservoir hosts for several zoonotic vector-borne bacteria and protozoa.

Rattus norvegicus and Suncus murinus are important reservoirs of zoonotic bacterial diseases. An understanding of the composition of gut and oropharynx bacteria in these animals is important for monitoring and preventing such diseases. We therefore examined gut and oropharynx bacterial composition in these animals in China.

Although salmonellosis is considered one of the most important food-borne zoonotic diseases in Europe, close contact between dogs and their owners can also be a potential source of Salmonella spp. for humans.

Salmonellosis is one of the most important food-borne zoonotic disease affecting both animals and humans. The objective of the present study was to identify gastrointestinal (GI) lactic acid bacteria (LAB) of canineorigin from Salmonella-negative dogs’ faeces able to inhibit monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium previously isolated from dogs’ faeces, in order to be used as a potential probiotic in pet nutrition.

Antimicrobial resistance and presence of zoonotic enteropathogens in shelter dogs pose a public health risk to shelter workers and potential adopters alike. In this study we investigated the prevalence of zoonotic bacterial pathogens and cephalosporin resistant (CefR ) enteric bacteria in the feces of apparently healthy shelter dogs in the Cumberland Gap Region (CGR) in the US states of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.

Increase in animal population has resulted in rise in animal bite cases and thus increase the potential for transmission of zoonotic diseases. That is why it is very important to consider some factors while considering the likelihood of disease transmission which includes species of animal, type of injury, severity of injury, vaccination status, interval between incident and treatment, and various attributes of the injured person (age, underlying health, etc.). It is also important to have knowledge about the natural oral flora of the animal.

Brucellosis is a worldwide re-emerging zoonotic disease of public health and economic importance. It affects a large number of domestic as well as wild animals and results in heavy losses to the animal husbandry sector. The direct culture of bacteria and serological test are the gold standard for Brucella spp. identification in the clinical samples. However, these assays have various limitations therefore PCR can be a potential tool to address aforesaid limitations and can be used for early detection of causative agents in disease condition.
