Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 23 to 27
The national championships are in two months. I’ll have been in hard training for just over
fourteen weeks by then. When I say hard, I mean it. I estimate that I will have done about four
and half thousand laps of the track in my fourteen-week training period. Young athletes from
all over the country will be attending, all of whom will like me, be hoping to impress the
national coaches. I’ve been thinking about what I am going to do before the races start. People
say you have to put the crowd and other competitors out of your mind. You are supposed to
focus on warming up but I want to remember every face. Coaches tell you not to think about
winning, just running – but I’m going to. My parents are going to be there to watch me. I hope
I’ll be able to do my best because their help has been important and I would really like to make
them proud of me. I won’t know until next week when we start timing my runs seriously what
chance of winning I have. My friends say that I am an optimist and, even though it will be my
first time at a big competition such as this, I think that I can get one of the first three places.
This would be good enough for me to be considered for a selection for the national team
before the end of the year.
Question 23: The national will take place_________.
A. in two months’ time
B. for two months
C. in over fourteen weeks’ time
D. in over three months’ time
Question 24: According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
B. The writer hasn’t been training hard enough.
C. The writer has done over four thousand laps of the track.
D. The writer has been training for over five weeks now.
Question 25: The word “impress” in the reading is closest in meaning to_________.
A. concentrate on something
B. follow someone or something
C. learn from someone or something
D. have a favourable effect on
Question 26: According to the text, the writer_________.
A. wants to be proud of his parents
B. is going to do as coaches tell him
C. is going to think about winning
D. is sure to win the competition.
Question 27: It can be inferred from the passage that_________.
A. the competition is held for young athletes nation-wide.
B. the writer’s parents are going to compete in the competition.
C. the writer won’t know when they start timing his runs.
