Lack of knowledge and understanding at the scientific, extension and farmer levels is the primary limitation to the effective management of Phytophthora diseases in Vietnam. The objectives of this project are to extend sustainable and effective disease control and management recommendations to a range of horticultural crops throughout Vietnam to reduce crop losses due to Phytophthora and to improve farmer incomes.

Research intensity1 in Vietnam is less than 0.2% which is lower that most developing countries of 0.5% and much lower than developed country average of 1.5%. GoV has targeted a 12% increase of central government funding levels from 2006 – 2011 and to date total funding increases in agricultural research funding have exceeded that level. MARD research funding provides approximately 65% of all forms of local funding in Vietnam.

The primary objective behind Research & Development (R&D2) priority assessment is to determine the broad research programmes that will provide Vietnam with the greatest return on investment in R & D provided by government and other major stakeholders. Priority setting is the central issue of research and extension management. It is a complex task. It must be done in a systematic framework able to allow the results to support open and robust decision-making about research and extension resource allocation and management.

In Mekong delta, mangrove forest distributes along the coastline of 700 km and it is a homeland for mud crab in tropical areas. The mud crab becomes potential to be alternative species from failed shrimp farming. Particularly, mud crab hatchery has been introduced and operated recently at Bac lieu, Tra vinh, Soc Trang, Ben Tre, Kien giang and Ca mau provinces. However, the survival from zoea stage to crablet stage 1 is low at approximately 5%. In addition, like shrimp rearing, the mud crab hatchery is using antibiotic as major treatment to prevent bacteria and fungi.

Viet Nam is a developing country and as such has a low level of vegetable oil consumption. Vegetable oils are an important source of calories in the human diet providing 38 kJ/g compared to 17.8 kJ/g for protein and carbohydrate. Vegetable oil consumption in Viet Nam is increasing and calories obtained from vegetable oils is likely to increase from 15-20% of the total diet to 35-45% as incomes increase and as government policies are implemented. Every year Viet Nam must import a large quantity of crude oil for processing. However, Viet Nam is an agricultural country with the potential to...

The major aims of this project centred around building capacity in protected cropping systems, trialling these systems with tomatoes and cucumbers in Vietnam and introducing farmers and other supply chain partners to these systems. As such, the emphasis was never intended to be on improving supply chains, merely examining current vegetable supply chains and determining the major problems. This milestone was added to the project after the original design and in-fact was extracted from another CARD project and added into this project.
