This report provides baseline information on investigations undertaken as part of the Collaboration for Agriculture and Rural Development CARD Project 050/04VIE “Improvement of export and domestic markets for Vietnamese fruit through improved post-harvest and supply chain management”. This collaborative project is funded by AusAID and administered by Hassall and Associates International.

The Government of Vietnam’s (GoV) Socio-Economic Plan outlines the government’s expectations for agriculture and rural development. The Agriculture Sector GDP in 2009 was 220 trillion VND, approximately 18% of total GDP. Agriculture's share of GDP has steadily declined GoV and while the GDP increased by 5.3% during 2009, the agriculture GDP increased by only 1.8%. Never-the-less government expects GDP growth in the agriculture sector to increase annually by 3 – 5 %.

Genetic improvement of fish species is considered a priority area for research and development by the government of Viet Nam, particularly in the context of rural development, food security and poverty alleviation. The overall objective of the project is to increase food security and income of rural Vietnamese in coastal communities by improving the profitability, and environmental sustainability, of intensive aquaculture in Vietnam. This addresses identified priorities of the CARD Program to build capacity in areas of fisheries and aquaculture and livestock feed improvement. The damage caused by rodents in agricultural systems is an important impediment to rural development in the Mekong Delta region. This proposal capitalises on the research findings and on the measurement of farmers' belief and practises associated with rodent control in the Mekong Delta.

The University of Queensland, together with its Vietnamese partner institutions, propose a CARD project to enhance the teaching and research capacity of staff in the three institutions. This will be achieved through a project targeting agroforestry systems for livestock feeding in the northern provinces of Vietnam. The project will focus on the use of adapted multipurpose trees in small holder farming and livestock feeding systems.
