Sweet sorghum is a new generation bio-energy crop with considerable tolerance to drought and salinity and amenable for multiple uses. Sweet sorghum has elicited the interest of breeder due to its capacity to provide renewable energy products, industrial commodities, food and animal feed. The sweet sorghum donor RSSV 313 is developed through a cross NSS223 x NARI 111 at MPKV, Rahuri through pedigree selection as identified and recommended as a donor parent in crop improvement programme based on specific physiological traits viz.

Preventing e. coli in food aim prevention and control require a multidisciplinary approach in animal and plant production as well as risk-based approaches along the entire food supply chain. These include the application of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Hygiene Practices (GHP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) from the farm to the consumer.

important regulators of biological processes in animals and plants. MiRNAs regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level by binding to mRNAs and either inhibit translation or modify the stability of the mRNA. Due to the important biological role of miRNAs it is of great interest to study their expression level in the cells. Furthermore, miRNAs have been associated with cancer and other diseases [1] and miRNA expression can help in the diagnosis and prognostic of human disease [2,3].

Intrinsic factor (IF) is the gastric protein that promotes the intestinal uptake of vitamin B12 . Gastric IF from animal sources is used in diagnostic tests and in vitamin pills. However, administration of animal IF to humans becomes disadvantageous because of possible pathogenic transmis-sion and contamination by other B12binders. We tested the use of recombinant plants for large-scale production of pathogen-free human recombinant IF. Human IF was successfully expressed in the recombinant plantArabidopsis thaliana....

A number of proteins related to the homotetrameric trans-port protein transthyretin (TTR) forms a highly conserved protein family, whichwe present in an integrated analysis of data from different sources combined with an initial bio-chemical characterization.Homologues of the transthyretin-relatedprotein (TRP) canbe found inawide rangeof species including bacteria, plants and animals, whereas transthyre-tinshave so faronlybeen identified invertebrates.

Tocopherols are essential micronutrients in human and animal nutrition due to their function as lipophilic anti-oxidants. Theyare exclusively synthesizedbyphotosynthetic organisms including higher plants. Despite the attributed beneficial health effects and many industrial applications, research on the tocopherol biosynthetic pathway and its regulation inplants is still limited.

Inorganic pyrophosphatase (PPase) is an important enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of inorganic pyro-phosphate (PPi)intoortho-phosphate (P i ). We report here the molecular cloning and characterization of a gene encoding the soluble PPase of the roundworm Ascaris suum. The predicted A. suumPPase consists of 360 amino acids with a molecular mass of 40.6 kDa and a pI of 7.1.

The conduction of protons through human Nox2 has pre-viously been shown to be dependent upon His115. Align-ment of sequences for both animal and plant Nox proteins indicated that histidines 115 and 119 are both highly con-served, while His111 was conserved among animal homo-logues of Nox1–4. To investigate the possible role that these histidine residues might play in the conduction of protons through Nox2, we have introduced both paired and single mutations into these histidine residues.

During a search for cDNAs encoding plant sterol acyl-transferases, we isolated four full-length cDNAs fromAra-bidopsis thaliana that encode proteins with substantial identity with animal lecithin : cholesterol acyltransferases (LCATs). The expressionof one of these cDNAs,AtLCAT3 (At3g03310), invarious yeast strains resulted in the doubling of the triacylglycerol content.

On the basis of a partial N-terminal sequence, Jolle`s and Jolle`s [Jolle`s, J., & Jolle`s, P. (1975)Eur. J. Biochem.54, 19–23] previously proposed that the lysozyme from the starfishAsterias rubensrepresents a new form of lysozyme, called typei(invertebrate) lysozyme. Indeed, it differed from both the typesc(chicken) and g(goose) known in other animals, as well as from plant and phage lysozymes. Recently, several proteins belonging to the same family have been isolated from protostomes. Here we report the com-plete mature protein sequence and cDNA sequence of the lysozyme from Asterias. ...

A pair of nuclear receptors, ecdysone receptor (EcR) and ultraspiracle (USP), heterodimerize and transduce ecdysteroid signals. The EcR and its nonsteroidal ligands are being developed for regulation of transgene expres-sion in humans, animals and plants. In mammalian cells, EcR:USP heterodimers can function in the absence of ligand, but EcR⁄retinoid X receptor (EcR:RXR) heterodimers require the presence of ligand for activa-tion.

The last step of the biosynthesis ofl-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in plants and animals is catalyzed by l-gulono-1,4-lactone oxidoreductases, which use bothl-gulono-1,4-lactone and l-galactono-1,4-lactone as substrates. l-Gul-ono-1,4-lactone oxidase is missing in scurvy-prone, vitamin C-deficient ani-mals, such as humans and guinea pigs, which are also highly susceptible to tuberculosis.

Melatonin is a ubiquitous molecule and widely distributed in nature, with functional activity occurring in unicellular organisms, plants, fungi and animals. In most vertebrates, including humans, melatonin is synthes-ized primarily in the pineal gland and is regulated by the environmental light⁄dark cycle via the suprachiasmatic nucleus.

In animal cells, many proteins have been shown to undergo glutathionyla-tion under conditions of oxidative stress. By contrast, very little is known about this post-translational modification in plants. In the present work, we showed, using mass spectrometry, that the recombinant chloroplast A4-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (A4-GAPDH) from Arabid-opsis thaliana is glutathionylated with either oxidized glutathione or reduced glutathione and H2O2.

Arabidopsis thaliana At2g33470 encodes a glycolipid transfer protein (GLTP) that enhances the intervesicular trafficking of glycosphingolipids in vitro. GLTPs have previously been identified in animals and fungi but not in plants. Thus, At2g33470 is the first identified plant GLTP and we have designated it AtGTLP1.
