The effects of pH, ionic strength and polymer ratio in the complexation of chitosan (CHI) with different anionic polysaccharides, namely gum Arabic (GA), sodium alginate (ALG) and κ-carrageenan (CRG), were investigated. This was made using titration techniques, which allowed the determination of stoichiometry and binding constant of complexes.

This study aimed to assess the effect of cadmium (Cd2+) concentrations on biovolume, pigments, malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide, proline, total phenolic compounds, total protein, and total carbohydrate contents of Cladophora glomerata. Cultivations of the alga (8.0 ± 0.1 g as fresh weight) were exposed to 7.5, 15, 30, and 60 mg/L of Cd2+ ions in 500 mL flasks containing 400 mL of the medium on a shaker at 120 rpm for 7 days. Results of Fourier transform infrared analyses indicated that the amide, anionic, and amino groups had significant rolesin the binding of Cd2+ on C. glomerata.

Calix[4]pyrrole derivatives with bulky substituents at their meso-positions were synthesized via mixed condensation of pyrrole with cyclohexanone and acetophenone derivatives. Anion binding studies, carried out by isothermal titration calorimetry in 1,2-dichloroethane with Cl− and CH3CO−2 anions in the form of their tetrabutylammonium salts, revealed that these new calix[4]pyrrole derivatives can bind the aforementioned anions as effectively as the unsubstituted “parent” system, octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole (1).

A pentaammineazidocobalt(III) complex, [Co(NH3)5N3](MnO4)2XH2O has been synthesized by an one-pot synthesis method. It was characterized by studies such as infrared (IR) and UV-visible spectroscopy. The single crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed that the title complex crystallizes in space group Cc. The cobalt center is six coordinated with slightly octahedral geometry. The supramolecular architecture is also formed by intermolecular N-H…O (anion and H2O) and Mn-O…O-H hydrogen bonds.

In this work, we calculate the formation energy, electronic structures, stabilities and Raman spectra for varying isomers of (ZrO2)n clusters. The total binding energy of the cluster (ZrO2)n indicates that energies of stabilization does not decrease monotonically with increasing size and the energies change very slow from n = 5.

Twenty-five piperidines were studied as potential radical scavengers and antitumor agents. Quantitative interaction of compounds with ctDNA using spectroscopic techniques was also evaluated. Our results demonstrate that the evaluated piperidines possesses different abilities to scavenge the radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the anion radical superoxide ( O2 ). The piperidine 19 was the most potent radical DPPH scavenger, while the most effective to O2 scavenger was piperidine 10.

Nitrophenols (such as o-nitrophenol (ONP), p-nitrophenol (PNP), and 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP)) are priority environmental pollutants. Their toxicity is pH dependent, and these molecular species of nitrophenols exhibit higher toxicity than their anionic counterparts. Herein, for the first time, a method for the in situ measurement of nitrophenols in acidic industrial wastewater was developed using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) with lignocellulose hazelnut shell-derived activated carbons (HSACs) as the binding agents. Nylon membranes (0.1 lm rated) with diffusion coefficients of (2.

The human multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP1) is an ATP-dependent efflux pump that transports anionic conjugates, and hydrophobic compounds in a glutathione dependent manner. Similar to the other, well-characterized multidrug transporter P-gp, MRP1 comprises two nucleotide-binding domains (NBDs) in addition to transmembrane domains. However, whereas the NBDs of P-gp have been shown to be functionally equivalent, those of MRP1 differ significantly.

CYP73 enzymes are highly conserved cytochromes P450 in plant species that catalyse the regiospecific 4-hydroxylation ofcinnamicacid to formprecursorsofligninandmanyother phenolic compounds. A CYP73A1 homology model based on P450 experimentally solved structures was used to iden-tify active site residues likely togovern substrate binding and regio-specific catalysis. The functional significance of these residues was assessed using site-directedmutagenesis.

Bilitranslocase is a carrier protein localized at the basolateral domain of the hepatocyte plasma membrane. It transports various organic anions, including bromosulfophthalein and anthocyanins. Functional studies in subcellular fractions enriched in plasma membrane revealed a high-affinity binding site for bilirubin, associated with bilitranslocase.

Cyclobutane-type pyrimidine dimers generated by ultraviolet irradiation of DNA can be cleaved by DNA photolyase. The enzyme-catalysed reaction is believed to be initiated by the light-induced transfer of an electron from the anionic FADH ) chromophore of the enzyme to the pyrimidine dimer. In this contribution, first infrared experiments using a novel E109A mutant ofEscherichia coliDNA photolyase, which is catalytically active but unable to bind the second cofactor methenyltetrahydrofolate, are described....

GTP is an allosteric activator of CTP synthase and acts to increase thekcat for the glutamine-dependent CTP synthesis reaction. GTP is suggested, in part, to optimally orient the oxy-anion hole for hydrolysis of glutamine that takes place in the glutamine amidotransferase class I (GATase) domain of CTP synthase.

2¢-Fluoro-2¢-deoxyuridine 3¢-phosphate (dU F MP) and arabinouridine 3¢-phosphate (araUMP) have non-natural furanose rings. dU F MP and araUMP were prepared by chemical synthesis and found to have three- to sevenfold higher affinity than uridine 3¢-phosphate (3¢-UMP) or 2¢-deoxy-uridine 3¢-phosphate (dUMP) for ribonuclease A (RNase A). These differ-ences probably arise (in part) from the phosphoryl groups of 3¢-UMP, dU F MP, and araUMP (pKa¼5.9) being more anionic than that of dUMP (pKa¼6.3). ...

The rate-limiting step for hydrolysis of thepositivelycharged oxoester benzoylcholine (BzCh) by human butyrylcho linesterase (BuChE) is deacylation (k3 ), whereas it is acyla-tion (k2 ) for hydrolysis of the homologous thioester ben-zoylthiocholine (BzSCh). Steady-state hydrolysis of BzCh and BzSCh by wild-type BuChEand its peripheral anionic site mutant D70G was investigated at different hydrostatic pressures, which allowed determination of volume changes associated with substrate binding, and the activation vol-umes for the chemical steps....
