Ebook "Catalysis for alternative energy generation" summarizes the role and the possibilities of catalysis in the production of new energy carriers and in the utilization of different energy sources. The main goal of this work is to go beyond those results discussed in recent literature by identifying new developments that may lead to breakthroughs in the production of alternative energy. The book discusses the use of biomass or biomass derived materials as energy sources, hydrogen formation in methanol and ethanol reforming, biodiesel production, and the utilization of biogases.

In this study, methyl ester was produced through the transesterification of UCO using calcined eggshell as a heterogeneous base catalyst. The objectives of this study were to: (a) investigate the production of a renewable catalyst through eggshell calcination; (b) assess the effect of MeOH/UCO molar ratio, catalyst/ UCO catalyst content, and reaction temperature on the ester content in biodiesel; and (c) use response surface methodology (RSM) to design, analyze, and optimize experimental conditions.

Microalgal harvesting has still been a challenge to investigators who take their investiment into microalgal production. The cost for microalgal downstream processing is as high as 20% of the total production of biodiesel. Among hundreds of curent methods of biomass harvesting, autoflocculation and bacteria-based aggregation are still being researched and applied in large-scale producuion.

High energy demand driven by decreasing fossil fuels, and global warming because of the burning of fossil fuels necessitates the utilization of renewable and clean energy. One of these renewable energy sources is biodiesel. The increasing trend of biodiesel over the last 20 years tends to result in increasing glycerol (Gly), which is produced during the biodiesel production in 10% ratio (w/w) as a by-product. Using Gly as raw material is an alternative way to produce bio-based new products such as glycerol carbonate (GlyC).

Microalgae are organisms effective of accumulating high quantity of industrially important lipids with promising characteristics as an excellent feedstock for biodiesel production. This study assess the possibility of using a green microalga, Chlorococcum infusionum (EAU10) for biodiesel production by evaluating the growth characteristic, lipid yield and fatty acid profile of the microalga cultivated at varying concentrations of nitrogen source.

In this study, two indigenous Chlorella strains were evaluated for triacylglycerol (TAG) production and related parameters during 10 days of N-deprivation. The strains were identified based on morphological characteristics and genomic information, named as Chlorella sp. IMU12 and Chlorella sp. IMU17. Time-dependent reduction of growth was accompanied by decreased chlorophyll content, reduced oxygen evolution ratio, and elevated carotenoid content of both strains cultivated in N-free Bold’s basal medium.

Plant oils are very important for domestic and industrial use. Biodiesel can be obtained from plant seed oil. Biodiesel is currently popular and in demand due to the high cost of petroleum and to avoid pollution. It is time to increase plant seed oil production and conduct research to find ways of enhancing its production. We studied two species of oil seed plants, i.e. Ricinus communis and Glycine max, with varying amounts of oil content. Proteins from six categories of enzymes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis were selected for study.

Reusability of two heterogeneous catalysts in ultrasound (US) assisted biodiesel production was investigated in comparison to each other. An ultrasound (US) generator (200 W, 20 kHz) equipped with a horn type probe (19 mm) was used. Regeneration experiments were planned according to second order central composite design (CCD) method. After the eighth use of the catalysts, biodiesel yield decreased from 99.1% to 90.4% for calcined calcite (CaO) and from 98.8% to 89.8% for calcined dolomite (CaO.MgO).

In this paper we describe the emissions of glycerol/diesel and glycerol/biodiesel emulsion blends on marine diesel engines. In addition, fuel physicochemical characteristics and handling issues for these fuels are discussed. Glycerol is an attractive fuel blending material as it is a waste product of biodiesel production with desirable combustion and fuel properties when emulsified into diesel and biodiesel fuels.

Tobacco seed oil could be used as an appropriate feedstock for biodiesel production. However, the high linoleic acid content of tobacco seed oil makes it susceptible to oxidation. Altering the fatty acid profile by increasing the content of oleic acid could improve the properties of biodiesel produced from tobacco seed oil.

The marine diatom based biodiesel may be the greatest possible options for future energy, particularly for India where land resources and freshwater are limited. In the above context, an attempt has been made to isolate the marine diatom Odontella aurita from Vellar estuary, South east coast of India and characterized for biodiesel production. Identification of microscopic structure, morphology was succeeding by bright field microscope and SEM.

The factors that affect transesterification such as temperature, time and molar ratio have been included. The study reveals that waste beef fat would be a suitable replacement of vegetable oils due to low cost, its role in protecting the environment, and beef tallow esters are close to ASTM D 6751 biodiesel standards. Research work needs to be carried out on heterogeneous catalysts and low-cost lipase catalysts to improve productivity.
