Ebook "Plant physiology" examines three ways plants respond to their changing environment. The first example can be found in all plants. Despite the extreme changes in weather, plants have to stay where they are and respond to whatever nature produces. Plants have the capacity to respond quickly and yet they can evolve in a single generation. The second example addresses how an individual leaf has to respond rapidly and repeatedly to maintain the proper balance of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water so that it can photosynthesize but not dry out.

In order to determine whether a cellular automaton is reversible or not the reversibility of its rule matrix is studied via linear algebraic tools.

In this project, traffic simulation according to the cellular automaton of the Nagel-Schreckenberg model (1992) with different boundary conditions. The sudden occurrence of traffic jams is successfully realised as well as boundary induced phases and phase transitions are observed in the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process. The extension to the Velocity Dependent Randomization model leads to metastabile high flow states and hysteresis of the flow. The impact of speed limits on the probability of the formation of traffic jams is investigated.

I present the investigation involving two extensions of the cellular automaton based NagelSchreckenberg model, the Velocity-Dependent-Randomisation (VDR) model, and the two-lane model for symmetric and asymmetric lane changing rule sets. The study of the VDR model outlines a potential method in extending the lifetime of a metastable state and consequently postponing an inevitable traffic jam by orders of magnitude. The two lane model produces a so called "critical" and "sub-critical" flow which combined cause the collapse of flow at a critical density.

The purpose of this study was to estimate travel time under incident conditions on a freeway. This paper presents a cellular automaton model that mimics traffic conditions and estimates travel times from upstream locations through the incident bottleneck, given an estimate of the incident duration.

Road traffic microsimulations based on the individual motion of all the involved vehicles are now recognized as an important tool to describe, understand, and manage road traffic. Cellular automata (CA) are very efficient way to implement vehicle motion. CA is a methodology that uses a discrete space to represent the state of each element of a domain, and this state can be changed according to a transition rule.

We study a simple three-lane cellular automaton, based upon the well known NagelSchreckenberg model, and examine the effect of slow cars in such a system. We point out the important parameters defining the shape of the fundamental digram for the three-lane model and compare it to that of a two-lane one, showing the new mode of interactions between lanes. It is possible to reduce the influence of slow cars by choosing an adequate version of the symmetry with respect to lanes.

CARSTEA Received 15 October 2003 and in revised form 10 March 2004 We propose two models for the description of the dynamics of an AIDS epidemic and of the effect of a combined-drugs AIDS treatment based on difference equations. We show that our interacting population model, despite its extreme simplicity, describes adequately the evolution of an AIDS epidemic. A cellular-automaton analogue of the discrete system of equations is presented as well.
