Elderly women meditate somewhat more frequently than men. Provincial elders also reported more frequent meditation than those in Phnom Penh. However older elderly meditate more frequently than younger elderly, a finding that is consistent with the higher percentage of older elderly who indicate religion is very important for them.

  • These demographic changes are taking place in developing countries alongside increasing mobility and changing family structures. Industrialization is eroding long-standing patterns of interdependence between the generations of a family, often resulting in material and emotional hardship for the elderly. The family and community networks in many developing countries that had formerly provided support to the older generation have been weakened, and often destroyed, by rapid social and economic change. The AIDS pandemic is also significantly affecting the lives of older people.

  • While there has been an increase in development assistance for health in general, this aid is volatile — often driven by profits and politics. Donor governments are susceptible to the political agendas of their parliaments, plac- ing a focus on short term results. Sustained health development does not fit this profile. Part of the solution lies in the harmonization or pooling of funds, focused around a single country plan, that is flexible and includes funding for both recurrent and capital expenditures.

  • Each year, 8.8 million patients are newly diagnosed with active TB and 1.6 million patients die of TB. The rapid spread of the human immunodeficiency virus has fueled the TB epidemic, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where 28% of TB patients are HIV positive (WHO 2007). The current first-line treatment for TB is a multidrug regimen consisting of rifampin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol (RIZE). Several major problems are associated with the currently available TB treatment.

  • Daniel et al. (1997) further refine style-based performance mea- sures by examining the actual holdings of mutual funds, and measuring the characteristics of the stocks held by the fund. The characteristics include the market capitalization or size, a measure of value (the ratio of book value to market value), and the return over the previous year. For a given fund, the OE portfolio is formed by matching the char- acteristics of the portfolio held by the fund with “passive” portfolios constructed to have the same characteristics....

  • States have largely abdicated regulatory authority for electronic media—television and radio—even though a review of federal pre- emption law suggests that only transmissions into a state from out of state or on cable are preempted. In other words, broadcasts that originate within a state are subject to state regulation. Although a state may claim such jurisdiction without a provision that makes the authority explicit, an explicit statement of jurisdiction is substantially preferable.

  • Predicting Needs as a Buyer. It is difficult to describe precisely the level of resources required to run an ex- periment or job. Depending on the inputs to a program, the ideal level of resource consumption can vary dramat- ically. Moreover, there is a tangible penalty formisestimating resource need, since these bids are made in advance of when the resources will actually be available. In order to match enough buyers with sellers, current market-based resource allocation schemes batch allocations into blocks of time.

  • Patients who lose healthy bone tissue as a result of inflammation or trauma need bone regenerative/reconstructive surgery in order to recover the function of the lost bone. To regenerate the lost bone tissue, autologous bone grafting is the current gold standard, though this technique is a great burden for patients because transplantable autologous bone must be harvested from a healthy site, which causes donor site morbidity and pain.

  • Most Western societies take clean water for granted. When we turn on the tap, we rarely question the source, its reliability or its quality. Perhaps out of habit, we assume there will always be more. Water is one of our most critical resources – even more important than oil. Water sustains agriculture and, thus, our food chain. Vast quantities of water are used to make the silicon chips that help power our computers and cell phones. Electric power plants depend heavily on water, and account for a staggering 39 percent of freshwater withdrawals in the United States.

  • Research over the last 30 years confirms that air pollution causes adverse effects on community health and the environment and imposes a real cost on the community. Economic theory shows that for resources to be used and distributed efficiently, all costs and benefits of an activity need to be adequately considered. However, in many cases, the costs of air emissions are ‘external’ to the production and consumption decision- making processes, as they are imposed on the wider community rather than the polluter.

  • Decreases in pH and ANC are often paral- leled by changes in element concentrations including increases in Al +3 concentrations and decreases in Ca +2 . High dissolved Al +3 concen- trations can have toxic effects on many types of aquatic biota, and at extreme levels few aquatic species can survive (Table 1). Organic forms of Al +3 are much less toxic than inorganic forms. Emerging research suggests that Ca +2 concentra- tions in streamwater are also an important bio- logical indicator.

Additionally, important general factors in supporting the development of an entrepreneurial society are positive entrepreneurial personal role models for individuals to follow, entrepreneurial attitudes among all relevant stakeholders, local empowerment, a greater belief in ‘trust’ than in regulations and the encouragement of initiative at all levels. • Under the old rules, the only way to get “published” was to have your press release “picked up” by the media. We’ve come a long way. The Web has turned all kinds of companies, non-profits, and even rock bands and political campaigners into just-in-time and just-right publishers. Organizations – the new publishers – create press releases that deliver useful information directly onto the screens of their buyers. Until recently, nobody ever thought of companies as publishers; newspapers and magazines published the news. But that’s all changing.
