Citrus greening

The present study focuses on the preparation of silver/copper bimetallic hybrid nanoparticles by green method from precursor solutions of silver nitrate & copper nitrate and the locally available citrus fruit (lemon) peel extract which behaves as the stabilizing and reducing agent. Initially, the formation of hybrid nanoparticles was noticed in the reaction mixture by colour change.

Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) is one the causative agents of greening disease in citrus, an unccurable, devastating disease of citrus worldwide. CLas is vectored by Diaphorina citri, and the understanding of the molecular interplay between vector and pathogen will provide additional basis for the development and implementation of successful management strategies. We focused in the molecular interplay occurring in the gut of the vector, a major barrier for CLas invasion and colonization.

Citrus fruits belonging to the family Rutaceae, occupies a place of considerable importance in the fruit crop due to high economic returns. Citrus greening is one of the most severe disease of citrus. Citrus greening disease was presumed to originate in china during the 1890 (Graca 1991). Citrus greening disease caused by a fastidious bacterium (Candidates Liberibacter asiaticum) is one of the important diseases that limit the citrus fruit production in several part of the country including Maharashtra. The citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, is the most important pest of citrus worldwide because it serves as a vector of Candidatus Liberibacter species that cause citrus greening disease. The nymphs and adults suck cell sap causing curling of leaves, defoliation, flower drop and death of branches from t to downwards which is known as die back. The peak population found usually in March-April and August-September.

The current research reveals the biocontrol potential of local Trichoderma isolates against the fungal pathogen Penicillium digitatum which causes green rot of Citrus fruit. In the present investigation, the isolates of Trichoderma spp. grown from locally collected soil samples were screened against the fungal pathogen Penicillium digitatum, which resulted into the substantial inhibition of the fungal phytopathogen.

Huanglongbing (HLB) or Citrus Greening Disease is a widespread and serious threat to the Citrus growing industry worldwide due to its complexity and destructiveness. On an average, the disease can cause 30 to 100 per cent yield loss around the globe depending on its severity. In Assam, an important factor associated with Citrus decline is the wide spread prevalence of Huanglongbing (HLB) in Khasi mandarin (Citrus reticulata). HLB was detected by molecular methods in Khasi mandarin orchards of Assam state in Northeastern India.
