In this study, phenol was adsorbed by commercial coconut shell charcoal (CSC), which is inexpensive, commercially available, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. The measurements, namely the density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), were conducted to characterize the features of the CSC.

Biochar is a carbon rich substance obtained from thermal decomposition plant biomass through the process of pyrolysis. The special characteristics of the biochar are its effectiveness in retaining most of the nutrients and maintaining them available to plants. The present field experiment was therefore conducted to investigate the effect of biochar application on nutrients concentration and uptake by soybean in acidic soils. Biochar produced from coconut shell was applied at the rates of 5, 7.5 and 10 t ha-1with two rates of recommended lime (100 and 50%).

Biogas purification using coconut shell based granular activated carbon by pressure swing adsorption
Biogas is one of the most important renewable energy source. Biogas normally contains 55 – 65% methane (CH4) and 45 – 55% carbon dioxide (CO2) and trace amounts of hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Raw biogas cannot be used as vehicle fuel as it contains CO2 and H2S which lowers the calorific value and causes corrosion to the storage vessel respectively. Enriching the biogas by removing CO2 and H2S will significantly improve the quality of biogas. The application of biogas either as cooking fuel or engine fuel chooses the type of purification method.

Due to fast climate change and foreseen damage through global warming, access to clean and green energy has become very much essential for the sustainable development of the society, globally. Biomass based energy is one of the important renewable energy resources to meet the day to day energy requirements and is as old as the human civilization. Biomass gasification is among few important aspects of bioenergy for producing heat, power and biofuels for useful applications.

The work was carried out to study the combine carbonization and liquefaction of coconut shell (Cocus nucifera) biomass in order to produce the charcoal and bio crude oil. The characterization was carried out before and after carbonization process in terms of proximate analysis, higher calorific value and bulk density.

A study on “Seasonal variation in quantitative parameters of coconut in major coconut growing districts of Andhra Pradesh” was conducted during 2010-2012. The study revealed that the coconuts of Andhra Pradesh had an average whole nut weigh (1145.31gm/nut), dehusked nut weight (454.10gm/nut), husk weight (686.76 gm/nut), shell weight (143.08gm/nut), water content (92.75 ml/nut) that were collected from three major coconut growing districts.

Genetic variability and correlation analysis of vegetative, floral, nut and yield characters were studied with 11 tall and 3 dwarfs which include 6 indigenous and 8 exotic coconut genotypes from diverse geographic origin. Analysis revealed a high degree of variability for most of the character studied.

Coconut shells were used as a raw material to produce powdered adsorbent carbon of size less than 2mm. The pH, electrical conductivity, proximate analysis (moisture content, volatile matter, ash content and fixed carbon content), ultimate analysis (Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Sulphur content), bulk density, particle density, total organic carbon and yield (percentage recovery) were analyzed as per the standard procedures. The raw material of about 20 kg was converted to adsorbent carbon of about 6 kg through thermochemical conversion in the absence of oxygen.

Performance of milky mushroom (Calocybe indica) on different agricultural wastes like paddy straw, castor stalks, sunflower stalks, coconut coir pith, oil palm waste and groundnut shells was evaluated during the summer season. The spawning was done by sterilization of all the seven substrates. The bags were kept in spawn running room with the maintenance of temperature (30°C–35° C) and relative humidity (70–80 %) respectively.

Phenols are generated in the wastewater of industrial processes. Phenol is extremely poisonous when entering the human body through the mouth. This study was conducted to determine the parameters of activated charcoal from coconut charcoal produced by Tam Dinh-Phu Yen Company and the ability of coconut charcoal in wastewater containing phenol.

Activated carbon (AC) from coconut shells is used as support for platinum catalysts. A series of catalysts based on platinum and Pt doped Sn were prepared by impregnation on different supports like AC and SiO2. It was shown that the nature of the support has a significant influence on the activity and selectivity to alkenes of the catalysts in the dehydrogenation of nhexane to alkenes. The higher activity and selectivity of the carbon supported platinum catalyst can be explained by higher dispersion of platinum particles of the catalysts.

Incineration of other wastes is expensive and leaves a huge residue and adds to air pollution. Pyrolysis is a process of combustion in absence of oxygen or the material burnt under controlled atmosphere of oxygen. It is an alternative to incineration. The gas and liquid thus obtained can be used as fuels. Pyrolysis of carbonaceous wastes like firewood, coconut, palm waste, corn combs, cashew shell, rice husk paddy straw and saw dust, yields charcoal along with products like tar, methyl alcohol, acetic acid, acetone and a fuel gas....
