This paper aims to investigate the roles of videos in language teaching and learning. Furthermore, the article analyzes several effects of videos on speaking skills, especially in terms of teaching cultural awareness, improving pronunciation and intonation, enhancing pragmatic understanding and motivating students.

In this article, the author elucidates the structural, semantic, and pragmatic characteristics of certain distinctive address words utilized by the Ê-đê people in their communication. Through an analysis of dialogues present in the epic Đăm Săn, the study of these unique address words reveals their functional capabilities and habitual usage, thereby presenting key insights into the characteristics of Ê-đê ethnic culture, which is notably characterized by its typical matrilineal family-based societal structure.

This paper explores the nature of English as an International Language from the point of view of the fit between language forms and cultural pragmatics. Some language forms can have different culturalpragmatic roles for different speakers, and some cultural-pragmatic roles can be differently expressed by different speakers. Some cultural-pragmatic roles have no direct linguistic realization in some varieties of EIL.

This study provides some insights into the use of speech acts by Vietnamese EFL learners from a cross-cultural perspective. It is suggested that the influence of culture has resulted in students’ common failures to understand and perform English speech acts. To minimize this kind of pragmatic failure, it is recommended that EFL teachers raise students’ awareness of some cultural issues in cross-cultural communication. Furthermore, it is necessary to incorporate speech acts into English language teaching with authentic input and lifelike communicative activities.

To fulfill the purpose, House’s functional-pragmatic model (House, 2015), extended with Attitudinal resources of Appraisal theory (Martin & White, 2005), is adopted as the analytical framework for assessment. The data include 75 “I - you” dyads collected from “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (2014) and its Vietnamese translation “Harry Potter và Hòn đá phù thuỷ” (2016).
