  • Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a pseudo cereal crop, which is considered a new alternative crop due to its high nutritional value and tolerance to environmental stresses. Its seeds are rich in proteins and amino acids (e.g., lysine, threonine, and methionine) that are deficient in other pseudo-cereal crops. It also contains essential fatty acids, such as linoleic, and alpha-linolenic acids, and high quantities of vitamins, e.g., riboflavin (B2), and tocopherol (vitamin E), and inorganic nutrients.

  • Water chestnut is an important high value aquatic crop grown in India. Of late the importance of this crop has been increasing due to the presence of appreciable amount of nutritional contents therein like protein, carbohydrates, fiber and minerals. This paper explores the recent agronomic management techniques and post-harvest utilization of water chestnut crop. Being a short duration annual crop, it can be introduced in low-input cropping systems as a viable alternative crop for sustainable horticulture.

  • The present investigation entitled “Fertility status of irrigated soils of Jhotwara panchayat samiti of Jaipur district “was carried out during 2010-11. The soils were pH neutral to alkaline (pH 7.2–8.5) in reaction having electrical conductivity (EC) value in surface soil (0.53–2.51 dSm-1 ). The data on nutrient showed that the soils are low in organic carbon and available nitrogen and low to medium in available phosphorus and available sulphur whereas, medium to high in available potassium.

  • Mushrooms are considered to be next generation health food as they are low in fat, have no cholesterol, high in protein with good biological value. Many of the micro nutrient deficiencies have been solved by various fortification strategies. Among alternate or other novel sources of proteins to bridge the protein gap in the food articles, mushroom offers themselves as a potent source of protein. The proteins of mushroom are of high quality and rich in various essential amino acids.

  • Positive responses to Zn addition on numerous crops have been documented. In this study, we field tested no Zn (0 kg ZnSO4.7 H2O/acre) and Zn treatment (25 kg ZnSO4.7 H2O/acre) in zinc deficient sites and their effect on grain yield of Pusa Basmati 1121. Surface soil samples (0-15cm) were collected from 16 sites from basmati rice grown soils in Gurdaspur district of Punjab. Findings of the study revealed that soils had variable available phosphorus and zinc status. The grain yield ranged from 20.8 to 29.8 q/ha in control with mean value of 25.

  • Vertical distribution of DTPA-extractable micronutrient cations (Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn) and its correlation with several physico-chemical properties of soils in fifteen orange orchards of Tamenglong district, Manipur was studied. Most of the upper soil layer had higher DTPA-extractable micronutrient cations (Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn) content than the lower horizons. In the profiles, the value of DTPA- extractable micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn) ranged from 18.62 to 45.12 mg kg-1 , 0.12 to 1.26 mg kg-1 , 3.42 to 44.33 mg kg-1 and 0.16 to 1.36 mg kg-1 , respectively.

  • The DTPA extractable cationic micronutrient and some important soil physico-chemical properties were investigated in two ecosystems namely irrigated and rainfed conditions of Vellore district of Tamil Nadu using GPS and GIS techniques. Considering the critical limits of soil micronutrients, all soil associations were not adequately supplied with DTPA extractable micronutrients in both the ecosystems. Irrespective of land use, the DTPA extractable cationic micronutrients were positively related with organic carbon content and negatively related to calcium carbonate content.
