  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the technological feasibility of biological filtration process for Mn control in Lorne WTP. This thesis consists of eight chapters. Project background and research objectives are described in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 presents an extensive literature review covering the nature of manganese, manganese analytical methods, manganese control methods, the nature of MOB and biological control of Mn in drinking water treatment. The materials and methods used throughout the experimental investigation for this study are described in Chapter 3.

  • Thesis focus on the problem of “Excitonic condensation in semimetal – semiconductor transition systems” to investigate the nature of the excitonic condensation state in these models by using MF theory. Electronic correlation in the systems is described by the two-band model including electron – phonon interaction and the extended Falicov-Kimball model involving electron – phonon interaction.

  • The human MUC4 gene encodes a large membrane-associated mucin, characterized by a mucin tandem repeat domain and a growth factor-like transmembrane domain. In addition to the originally published sequence (sv0-MUC4), several MUC4 cDNA sequences (called sv1-MUC4 to sv21MUC4, MUC4/X, MUC4/Y) from various tissues and cell lines have been recently described. They differ from sv0MUC4 by deletions and/or insertions located in the 3¢ region or, for two of them, by deletion of the central repetitive domain.

  • In spiders soluble proteins are converted to form insoluble silk fibres, stronger than steel. The final fibre product has longbeen the subject of study;however, little is knownabout the conversion process in the silk-producing gland of the spider. Here we describe a study of the conversion of the soluble form of the major spider-silk protein, spidroin, directly extracted from the silk gland, to ab-sheet enriched stateusing circular dichroism(CD) spectroscopy.

  • This work describes an online application that uses Natural Language Generation (NLG) methods to generate walking directions in combination with dynamic 2D visualisation. We make use of third party resources, which provide for a given query (geographic) routes and landmarks along the way. We present a statistical model that can be used for generating natural language directions. This model is trained on a corpus of walking directions annotated with POS, grammatical information, frame-semantics and markup for temporal structure. ...

  • A protocol to follow the processing of angiotensin I into angiotensin II by rabbit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and its inhibition by a novel natural antagonist, the leech osmoregulator factor (LORF) using capillary zonal electrophoresis is described. The experiment was carried out using the Beckman PACE system and steps were taken to determine (a) the migration profiles of angiotensin and its yielded peptides, (b) the minimal amount of angiotensin II detected, (c) the use of different electrolytes and (d) the concentration of inhibitor. ...

  • Understanding the sequence determinants of protein struc-ture, stabilityand folding is critical for understanding how natural proteins have evolved and how proteins can be engineeredtoperformnovel functions.Thecomplexityof the protein folding problem requires the abilityto search large volumes of sequence space for proteins with specific struc-tural or functional characteristics.

  • In this review, we describe the role of a small ubiquitin-like protein modi-fier (SUMO)-conjugating protein, Ubc9, in synaptonemal complex forma-tion during meiosis in a basidiomycete, Coprinus cinereus. Because its meiotic cell cycle is long and naturally synchronous, it is suitable for molecular biological, biochemical and genetic studies of meiotic prophase events.

  • The goal of this paper is to describe all closed, aspherical Riemannian manifolds M whose universal covers M have a nontrivial amount of symmetry. By this we mean that Isom(M ) is not discrete. By the well-known theorem of Myers-Steenrod [MS], this condition is equivalent to [Isom(M ) : π1 (M )] = ∞. Also note that if any cover of M has a nondiscrete isometry group, then so does its universal cover M . Our description of such M is given in Theorem 1.2 below. The proof of this theorem uses methods from Lie theory, harmonic maps,...

  • In this paper we describe the propagation of C ∞ and Sobolev singularities for the wave equation on C ∞ manifolds with corners M equipped with a Rie2 1 mannian metric g. That is, for X = M × Rt , P = Dt − ∆M , and u ∈ Hloc (X) solving P u = 0 with homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, we show that WFb (u) is a union of maximally extended generalized broken bicharacteristics. This result is a C ∞ counterpart of Lebeau’s results for the propagation of analytic singularities on real analytic manifolds with...

  • We prove that for any s 0 the majority of C s linear cocycles over any hyperbolic (uniformly or not) ergodic transformation exhibit some nonzero Lyapunov exponent: this is true for an open dense subset of cocycles and, actually, vanishing Lyapunov exponents correspond to codimension-∞. This open dense subset is described in terms of a geometric condition involving the behavior of the cocycle over certain heteroclinic orbits of the transformation.

  • In this paper we will prove the Calabi-Yau conjectures for embedded surfaces (i.e., surfaces without self-intersection). In fact, we will prove considerably more. The heart of our argument is very general and should apply to a variety of situations, as will be more apparent once we describe the main steps of the proof later in the introduction.

  • We define and study an algebra Ψ∞ (M0 ) of pseudodifferential opera1,0,V tors canonically associated to a noncompact, Riemannian manifold M0 whose geometry at infinity is described by a Lie algebra of vector fields V on a compactification M of M0 to a compact manifold with corners. We show that the basic properties of the usual algebra of pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold extend to Ψ∞ (M0 ).

  • We describe a Schubert induction theorem, a tool for analyzing intersections on a Grassmannian over an arbitrary base ring. The key ingredient in the proof is the Geometric Littlewood-Richardson rule of [V2]. As applications, we show that all Schubert problems for all Grassmannians are enumerative over the real numbers, and sufficiently large finite fields. We prove a generic smoothness theorem as a substitute for the Kleiman-Bertini theorem in positive characteristic.

  • We describe a geometric Littlewood-Richardson rule, interpreted as deforming the intersection of two Schubert varieties into the union of Schubert varieties. There are no restrictions on the base field, and all multiplicities arising are 1; this is important for applications. This rule should be seen as a generalization of Pieri’s rule to arbitrary Schubert classes, by way of explicit homotopies. It has straightforward bijections to other Littlewood-Richardson rules, such as tableaux, and Knutson and Tao’s puzzles.
