Drug delivery system

The nasal route for drug administration has the potential for local and systemic delivery of a wide variety of therapeutics. Nasal spray drug delivery has the potential to administer drugs to the bloodstream, avoiding the use of painful needles. While there is great potential, studies in the area are limited and somewhat conflicting. This study aimed to support the improvement of nasal drug delivery through experimental work on a model nasal cavity and through experimental characterisation of nasal spray behaviour. Four different brands of nasal spray were investigated.

A bio-nanocapsule (BNC), composed of the surface antigen (sAg) of the hepatitis B virus, is an efficient nanomachine with which to accomplish the liver-specific delivery of genes and drugs. Approximately 110 molecules of sAg are associated to form a BNC particle with an average diameter of 130 nm. TheLprotein is an sAg peptide composed mainly of preS and S regions. The preS region, with specific affinity for human hepatocytes, is localized in the N-terminus.

Polymeric micelle, the self-assembly of block copolymers with core-shell architecture, is a promising nanocarrier for drug and gene delivery. There are several relevant properties in polymeric micelle as nanocarrier systems, such as longevity in blood circula-tion, tissue-penetrating ability, spatial and temporal controlled drug release, and reduced inherent toxicity of cytotoxic reagents.

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among women with gynecologic malignancies in the United States. Advanced ovarian cancers are difficult to cure with the current available chemotherapy, which has many associated systemic side effects. Doxorubicin is one such chemotherapeutic agent that can cause cardiotoxicity. Novel methods of delivering chemotherapy without significant side effects are therefore of critical need.

The treatment of AIDS remains a serious challenge owing to high genetic variation of Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1). The use of different antiretroviral drugs (ARV) is significantly limited by severe side-effects that further compromise the quality of life of the AIDS patient. In the present study, we have evaluated a liposome system for the delivery of nevirapine, a hydrophobic non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Liposomes were prepared from egg phospholipids using thin film hydration.
