This thesis presents a pro–active research work motivated by the prospect of the imminent implementation of the regulatory requirement for pedestrian protection, Global Technical Regulation–9 (GTR–9) (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe 1998) in the near future. To meet the performance criteria for pedestrian protection head impact, it is vital to incorporate the required design parameters into the hood design process at an early stage. These main design parameters are architectural and changing them late in the vehicle design process is very expensive and difficult to implement.

This thesis examines the determinants of bank equity risk and credit risk as well as providing an analysis of the change in bank equity risk following the formation of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). It is motivated by the increasing interest in bank risk research particularly since the formation of EMU and the global financial crisis. The study considers a range of financial institutions across 36 countries from the period of 1995-2006.

The Central Statistics Office has registered increased availability in part-time courses in Ireland over recent years. This study aims to investigate the motivators driving part-time study and the impact studying part-time has on professional and personal lives of full-time employees in Ireland. Utilising a qualitative research approach, data was collected using open ended, semi-structured interviews on six desirable participants and examined using thematic analysis. Extracted information was interpreted and discussed.

The research findings suggest that the entrepreneurs former place of employment is inadvertinly creating entrepreneurs. The findings also suggest that self-efficacy and risk taking is positively correlated to entrepreneurship, while simultaneously the fear of failure is a factor for many Irish entrepreneurs. The need for achievement and observing successful entrepreneurs were also prominent motivating factors for starting up a business.

A structured questionnaire was completed by middle level bank manager’s to test their attitudes towards the four dimensions of CSR proposed by Carroll (1979). The study found that bank managers ranked the economic dimensions as the most important responsibility followed by legal, philanthropic and ethical. Furthermore, Interviews were held with two senior bank managers to investigate the reasons why the order of priority differs from Carroll (1979) and Visser (2008) who adapted the priority of dimensions in developing countries.

The thesis has been conducted in Hanoi, one of two economic – cultural – political centers of Vietnam. Moreover, Hanoi is the largest centre of education in Vietnam with a variety of reputable and ancient universities.
