  • In recent years, the prediction of the effective transport properties have received a great number of investigations. The present work is dedicated to determining the effective permeability of two-dimensional (2D) doubly porous materials made of an isotropic permeable solid matrix in which elliptical shaped pores of any size are embedded.

  • In this paper, we will extend the result of Farina to the general case a0 and look for the effect of the degeneracy on the range of the exponent p on Liouville-type theorem. It seems that the presence of the weight term |x|a makes the problem more challenging. The main difficulty is that the Grushin operator is nonautonomous. This requires suitable scaled test functions in the integral estimate.

  • Given a compact four dimensional manifold, we prove existence of conformal metrics with constant Q-curvature under generic assumptions. The problem amounts to solving a fourth-order nonlinear elliptic equation with variational structure. Since the corresponding Euler functional is in general unbounded from above and from below, we employ topological methods and min-max schemes, jointly with the compactness result of [35]. 1.

  • We establish a correspondence between orbifold and singular elliptic genera of a global quotient. While the former is defined in terms of the fixed point set of the action, the latter is defined in terms of the resolution of singularities. As a byproduct, the second quantization formula of Dijkgraaf, Moore, Verlinde and Verlinde is extended to arbitrary Kawamata log-terminal pairs. 1. Introduction One of the fundamental problems suggested by the intersection homology theory is to determine which characteristic numbers can be defined for singular varieties. ...

  • MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS FOR QUASILINEAR ELLIPTIC NEUMANN PROBLEMS IN ORLICZ-SOBOLEV SPACES NIKOLAOS HALIDIAS AND VY K. LE Received 15 October 2004 and in revised form 21 January 2005 We investigate the existence of multiple solutions to quasilinear elliptic problems containing Laplace like operators (φ-Laplacians). We are interested in Neumann boundary value problems and our main tool is Br´ zis-Nirenberg’s local linking theorem. e 1. Introduction In this paper, we consider the following elliptic problem with Neumann boundary condition, −div α ∇u(x) ∇u(x) = g(x,u) a.e. on Ω (1.1) ∂u = 0 a.e.

  • SEMILINEAR PROBLEMS WITH BOUNDED NONLINEAR TERM MARTIN SCHECHTER Received 17 August 2004 We solve boundary value problems for elliptic semilinear equations in which no asymptotic behavior is prescribed for the nonlinear term. 1. Introduction Many authors (beginning with Landesman and Lazer [1]) have studied resonance problems for semilinear elliptic partial differential equations of the form −∆u − λ u = f (x,u) in Ω, u = 0 on ∂Ω, (1.1) where Ω is a smooth bounded domain in Rn , λ is an eigenvalue of the linear problem −∆u = λu in Ω, u = 0 on ∂Ω, (1.

  • MONOTONE ITERATIVE TECHNIQUE FOR SEMILINEAR ELLIPTIC SYSTEMS A. S. VATSALA AND JIE YANG Received 27 September 2004 and in revised form 23 January 2005 We develop monotone iterative technique for a system of semilinear elliptic boundary value problems when the forcing function is the sum of Caratheodory functions which are nondecreasing and nonincreasing, respectively. The splitting of the forcing function leads to four different types of coupled weak upper and lower solutions. In this paper, relative to two of these coupled upper and lower solutions, we develop monotone iterative technique.

  • MAXIMAL REGULAR BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS IN BANACH-VALUED WEIGHTED SPACE RAVI P. AGARWAL, MARTIN BOHNER, AND VELI B. SHAKHMUROV Received 10 July 2004 This study focuses on nonlocal boundary value problems for elliptic ordinary and partial differential-operator equations of arbitrary order, defined in Banach-valued function spaces. The region considered here has a varying bound and depends on a certain parameter.

  • EIGENVALUE PROBLEMS FOR DEGENERATE NONLINEAR ELLIPTIC EQUATIONS IN ANISOTROPIC MEDIA ˘ DUMITRU MOTREANU AND VICENTIU RADULESCU ¸ Received 23 September 2004 and in revised form 26 November 2004 We study nonlinear eigenvalue problems of the type − div(a(x)∇u) = g(λ,x,u) in RN , where a(x) is a degenerate nonnegative weight. We establish the existence of solutions and we obtain information on qualitative properties as multiplicity and location of solutions. Our approach is based on the critical point theory in Sobolev weighted spaces combined with a Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg-type inequality.

  • MULTIPLE POSITIVE SOLUTIONS OF SINGULAR p-LAPLACIAN PROBLEMS BY VARIATIONAL METHODS KANISHKA PERERA AND ZHITAO ZHANG Received 20 July 2004 We obtain multiple positive solutions of singular p-Laplacian problems using variational methods. The techniques are applicable to other types of singular problems as well. 1. Introduction We consider the singular quasilinear elliptic boundary value problem −∆ p u = a(x)u−γ + λ f (x,u) in Ω, (1.1) u 0 in Ω, u = 0 on ∂Ω, where Ω is a bounded C 2 domain in Rn ,n ≥ 1, ∆ p u = div(|∇u| p−2 ∇u) is the p-Laplacian, 1 0 is a constant, λ...

  • BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS FOR THE 2ND-ORDER SEIBERG-WITTEN EQUATIONS CELSO MELCHIADES DORIA Received 8 June 2004 It is shown that the nonhomogeneous Dirichlet and Neuman problems for the 2nd-order Seiberg-Witten equation on a compact 4-manifold X admit a regular solution once the nonhomogeneous Palais-Smale condition is satisfied. The approach consists in applying the elliptic techniques to the variational setting of the Seiberg-Witten equation. The gauge invariance of the functional allows to restrict the problem to the Coulomb subspace C of configuration space.

  • EXISTENCE OF INFINITELY MANY NODAL SOLUTIONS FOR A SUPERLINEAR NEUMANN BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM AIXIA QIAN Received 12 January 2005 We study the existence of a class of nonlinear elliptic equation with Neumann boundary condition, and obtain infinitely many nodal solutions. The study of such a problem is based on the variational methods and critical point theory. We prove the conclusion by using the symmetric mountain-pass theorem under the Cerami condition. 1. Introduction Consider the Neumann boundary value problem: − u + αu = f (x,u), ∂u = 0, ∂ν x ∈ Ω, (1.
