Flavonoids are a diverse group of natural compounds extensively studied in various research articles. They are widely distributed in the plant kingdom and exhibit various biological activities, including antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anticancer, antiviral, and antimicrobial effects. The genus Knema Lour., which contains many species in Southeast Asia, has been traditionally used to treat various ailments. The current review aims to provide a comprehensive update on the isolation of flavonoids and other secondary metabolites from the genus Knema Lour. between 1978 and 2022.

In this study, nine ferulic and caffeic acid-based 1,2,4 and 1,3,4 oxadiazole molecular hybrids were synthesized and their cytotoxic activity was evaluated mainly against Glioblastoma (GBM) cell lines. Compounds 1 and 5 exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against three different GBM cell lines (LN229, T98G, and U87), without toxicity to healthy human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC). In addition, their cytotoxicity was also evaluated against three additional cancer cell lines and more inhibitory results were found than GBM cell lines.

The synthesis of a novel series of pyridine and bipyridine derivatives is described via one-pot multicomponent reaction of 5-acetylimidazole, malonitrile (or ethylcyanoacetate or diethylmalonate), substituted benzaldehyde (or terephthaldehyde), and ammonium acetate in good yields. The structures of all the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of elemental analysis and spectral data. The antimicrobial activities of the synthesized compounds were screened and the results showed that most of such compounds exhibit considerable activities.

The antimicrobial activity of the products was evaluated and the results revealed that compounds 8f and 15f showed strong activity against gram-positive bacteria while compound 15d showed the highest activity against gramnegative bacteria. Moreover, compounds 15b, 8d, 8e, 8c, 8l, and 8j exhibited significant antifungal activity. In addition, the antitumoral activity of the synthesized products against different cancer cell lines was determined and the results revealed that compound 12c was the most active against MCF-7, HepG-2, HCT-116, and HeLa with IC50 values of 0.51, 0.72, 0.95, and 0.

Xanthohumol is a prenylated chalcone that exhibit antioxidant, anticancer and chemoprotective effects. Its only source in human nutrition is beer, nevertheless a large part of xanthohumol from hops is isomerized by heat to isoxanthohumol and desmethylxanthohumol, from which a racemic mixture of 6- and 8-prenylnaringenins is formed during the beer production. Xanthohumol is also converted to isoxanthohumol by digestion, leading to the formation of 8-prenylnaringenin that is being catalyzed by the enzymes of the intestinal microorganisms as well as liver enzymes.

Novel 1-substituted 3-(p-isopropylphenyl)-5-phenylformazans (3a–g) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, and FT-IR techniques and UV-visible spectroscopy. Antiproliferative activities of 3a–g against HeLa and C6 cells were determined using the BrdU cell proliferation ELISA assay. 5-Florouracil was used as the positive control. The effects of substituents (–H, –CH3, and –I) and their positions (ortho, meta, and para) on the antiproliferative activities were evaluated.

On the basis of chemical and spectral analyses, the fucoidan fractions obtained were found to be the sulfated fucogalactans containing sulfate ester groups and uronic acid, and composed essentially of fucose and galactose, as well as a minor amount of other sugars. The polysaccharide fractions were tested for anticancer activity. The primarily obtained results showed that all fucoidan fractions isolated from S. swartzii demonstrate bioactivity effects against cancer cells, while fraction F5 with a highest sulfate content exhibits the strongest antiinvasion activity.

The present study was undertaken to ascertain the presence of anticancer phyto-constituent in the Indian Combretum species and its further utilization in the treatment of tumor. The phyto-chemical constituents of the leaf and bark extracts were recognized with reference to standard on the same HPTLC plate. The leaf extracts exhibited higher quantity of combretastatins than the bark samples. The combretastatin content was recorded the highest (182 µg/g) in the leaf extract of C. albidum. Antibacterial activity was studied by disk diffusion assay against seven bacterial strains.

The essential oils from Thanh Son exhibited potent cytotoxic activity against Hela and Hep3B cell lines with the IC50 values ranging from 1.18±0.26 to 8.91±0.32 µg/ml. The structure of the complexes have been examined by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, UV, IR, Raman and NMR spectra. It is shown that P1÷ P6 have cis-configuration, two molecules m-toluidine of P7 bound to the Pt(II) in two cis- positions compared with the molecular pyridine.
