This research investigates the relationship between post fault transient overvoltages and the functionality of the digital distance protection. The study is conducted in a 66kV network with a neutral earth resistor as method to earth the power system. This paper begins by performing an extensive power system analysis on ground fault transient overvoltages. The study is conducted by using the PSCAD-EMTC software package.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the technological feasibility of biological filtration process for Mn control in Lorne WTP. This thesis consists of eight chapters. Project background and research objectives are described in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 presents an extensive literature review covering the nature of manganese, manganese analytical methods, manganese control methods, the nature of MOB and biological control of Mn in drinking water treatment. The materials and methods used throughout the experimental investigation for this study are described in Chapter 3.

Pest control practices in the vegetable crops have been heavily dominated by the routine use of broad-spectrum insecticides to control pests. Concerns have emerged about the adverse consequences of over use of pesticide. These consequences include short and longterm health hazards, contamination and environmental degradation. To minimize the pest losses farmers heavily depend on the chemical pesticides and accessing pest management information from the pesticide dealers due to weak state extension support system.

I present the investigation involving two extensions of the cellular automaton based NagelSchreckenberg model, the Velocity-Dependent-Randomisation (VDR) model, and the two-lane model for symmetric and asymmetric lane changing rule sets. The study of the VDR model outlines a potential method in extending the lifetime of a metastable state and consequently postponing an inevitable traffic jam by orders of magnitude. The two lane model produces a so called "critical" and "sub-critical" flow which combined cause the collapse of flow at a critical density.

A novel method, based upon primer extension, has been developed for measuring the reopening temperature of a single type of DNA hairpin structure. Two DNA oligo-nucleotides have been utilized and designated as primers 1 and2.Primer1,withits5- and3¢-termini fully comple-mentary to the hairpin flanking sequences, was used to evaluate primer extension conditions, and primer 2, with its 3¢-end competing with the DNA hairpin stem, was used to detect the DNA hairpin reopening temperature.

The efficient engineering of enzymes with novel activities remains an ongoing challenge. Towards this end, genetic selection techniques provide a method for finding rare solutions to catalytic problems that requires only a limited foreknowledge of structure–function relationships. We have used genetic selections to extensively probe the structure and mechanism of chorismate mutases. The insights gained from these investigations will aid future enzyme design efforts.

RNA–protein interactions are fundamental to gene expression. Thus, the molecular basis for the sequence dependence of protein–RNA recognition has been extensively studied experimentally. However, there have been very few computational studies of this problem, and no sustained attempt has been made towards using computational methods to predict or alter the sequence-specificity of these proteins.

Serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) is a powerful technique to study gene expression at the genome level. However, a disadvantage of the short-ness of SAGE tags is that it prevents further study of SAGE library data, thus limiting extensive application of the SAGE method in gene expression studies. However, this problem can be solved by extension of the SAGE tags to 3¢ cDNAs.

Abstract Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) kinase domain mutations hyperactivate the kinase and confer kinase addiction of the non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumor cells. Almost all of these mutations are located within exons 18-21. The -216 single nucleotide polymorphism in the promoter region is associated with increased EGFR production. We present a method for detecting these common mutations in 81 cases of NSCLC.
